Description "Father...Faaatheeerrr....Get up Father! It's dawn!"

Scar let out a growl as he flopped his paw over his face. A few days had passed since Nuka's presentation, and now Scar was expected to start teaching the boy how to be king, even though he was only his heir temporarily. The thing was that Scar didn't want to teach Nuka anything. After all, he was, as he said, temporary. But he knew that if he didn't, neither Sarabi and her lionesses nor Balondemu would get off his ass until he did. Besides, it was only fair that he should suffer some while his secret lover/bodyguard had to do the deed with a lioness (which he was not so keen on doing) to give him the heir he so desperately desired.

But why, Great Spirit, did teaching the brat mean he had to get up at the crack of dawn!? At least Mheetu had the decency to wait until later in the day.

"Go back to bed, you stupid termite. It's too damn early in the morning for your pathetic whining!" the King grumbled as he turned his back to the cub. How Zira, who slept peacefully next to him, could sleep through this racket Scar would never know.

"Father, c'mon! Get up! You promised, remember?" the cub whined, tugging on his ear in a pathetic attempt to move him.

Scar's ears pricked at those words. "You promised, remember?" Those words...How many times had he said those exact words to his own father? And how many times had his father broken his word to him, or just flat out ignored him?

"...Sigh. Oh alright. I'm awake."

"YES!"

"Quiet, fool! You'll wake your mother up." Scar snapped, opening his eyes and sitting up. "And believe me, you don't want to wake her this early in the morning."

"Oh, right. Sorry." Nuka whispered.

Standing up, Scar began to stretch out, cracking his spine. Nuka darted off ahead of him, trampling over paws and tails of the lionesses and hyenas that happened to be sticking out. The Dark King followed behind his energetic son much more carefully, careful not to step on anyone. He gave a quick glance around and spotted Balondemu sleeping at the entrance of the den. He noticed another, smaller lioness sleeping next to him with a content look on her face. Scar felt a twinge of jealousy, but knew that it was best to leave them be. After all, that lioness -Ngina, wasn't it?- would be the one to bare his perfect son. And after that Balondemu would once again belong to him and him alone.

Dawn had barely broken by the time Scar exited the den with Nuka, but you could barely tell the difference these days. These days the Pride Lands were often covered in dark, stormy clouds, but they never dropped one drop of their precious water. The Pride Lands remained in a drought worse than the one Scar's mother Uru dealt with during her reign, and possibly even one worse than the one her own father Mohatu dealt with the generation before hers during his reign. But Scar knew that with all these dark clouds hanging about, it was only a matter of time before the rainy season would start back up. There would be no need to leave Pride Rock, despite what Sarabi and her annoying sister Diku kept saying.

"Come, Nuka. Let me show you what my...father..." Scar spat the word out as if it were a tough piece of prey, "showed me when I was your age." Scar lead Nuka up all the way to the very top of Pride Rock. He took the boy out to the very edge, then sat down. He took his paw and made a wide arcing motion with it, and began speaking monotonously, "Behold. Everything the light touches is our kingdom."

"Wow..." Nuka gasped, his red eyes wide with awe as he took everything in. Despite the fact that everything looked brown and dead -hardly anything like the thriving kingdom Scar made himself believe it to be- it was still quite impressive to look at due to it's massive size.

Scar rolled his eyes slightly, but continued to speak none the less, repeating the same words that were said to him and Mufasa many years ago by their own father, Ahadi.

"A King's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Nuka, the sun will set on my time here, and will rise with a new king."

"And this'll all be mine?" the reddish brown cub asked, amazement in his voice.

Scar paused. Had Zira not told him that he was only a temporary replacement until his new heir had been birthed? Or was he really that stupid to believe that he had a chance as his heir?

"Well? Will it Father?"

The Dark King frowned as he looked down at his son. Nuka looked up at him with a face so very much like his own, so full of hope and innocence. He remembered how he used to be like that, so young and care free and innocent, before his father tore that all away from him with his negligence. Could he do the same to Nuka as Ahadi had done to him?

"Well...We'll see, Nuka." Scar finally answered, his voice guarded. "The future holds many uncertainties. But, for now, while you're Crowned Prince, these lands will someday be yours."

"Whoa...All of this...Mine..." Nuka whispered, obviously not noticing the hesitation in his father's answer as he once again looked out at the kingdom. "But it'll need some sprucing up though. It looks kinda...well, dead."

"That's because we're in the middle of a drought." Scar answered. "With no rain, we have no water, and with no water, no plants. And with no plants -"

"No food?"

"Correct. Which is why the lionesses must work harder to hunt for us all during these difficult times."

"But that's not what Auntie Sarabi said was wrong." Nuka murmured. This caught Scar's attention, and he looked down at his son with scrutiny.

"Oh? And what exactly did "Auntie" Sarabi say was wrong?" Scar asked with a slight growl to his voice.

"That everything is dying and that the herds are leaving because you're a bad king and that you broke the Circle of Life by letting the hyenas hunt so much. And I think she's right - about the Circle part, not the king part. You're a great king, Father!"

"And what makes you say that?" Scar asked, narrowing his eyes. "Do you even know what the Circle of Life is?"

"Yeah. Auntie Sarabi explained it to me yesterday. She said that everything exists in a delicate balance, and that a king is supposed to understand and protect that balance."

"Oh really?" Scar growled. "And what else did she say?" He was going to have to have a serious coversation with Sarabi for filling his son's head with useless rabble.

"Well..." Nuka went on. "She said that we have to respect all the creatures, from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope."

"Hmph. Why would I respect prey?" the Dark King sniffed.

"Because, when we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. So we're all connected by the Circle of Life!"

"Well, that's all well and good, but from now on you should ignore any life lessons "Auntie" Sarabi gives you in the future." Scar said with a sneer. "All that is is useless rabble."

"Really? I think it makes sense." Nuka said. "I mean, think about it Father. If there are no preditors like us, then the prey eats all the grass, and then there's no food for the prey to eat, and then they all die out or leave. And alternatively, if we eat all the prey, then there's no food for us, so then we starve and die out. Not quite sure what would happen to the grass though...Maybe it would get too long or something...Hmm..."

Scar looked at his son as if he'd grown another head. Had this little termite really come up with something so complex on his own? Him??? No, Sarabi had to have planted that into his head before hand. And yet, Scar wasn't so sure that that would be something Sarabi would come up with. Perhaps Nuka wasn't as stupid as he seemed.

"...I think that's enough for today's lesson, Nuka. We'll begin with your lessons again tomorrow - after dawn."

EDIT: Oh poop. I just realized I forgot Scar's scar!    There, hopefully it looks better now (not satisfied with how the scar looks, might edit it to look better later).

NOTE: Fugly background is fugly. I tried to make it look somewhat like when Mufasa and Simba were up there, but since I didn't have a reference to look at at the time...well, you can see how badly I fucked up. No river, no dark creepy place (although I suppose you could say that by now everything is dark and creepy, so it just blends in now), and no gorge. BLAH. Oh well. As a background in general I think it looks pretty good -I feel like I'm getting better at making them- but it sucks as a background of the dead Pride Lands from the top of Pride Rock (if you understand what I'm saying).

Also, Nuka is beginning to show Scar that he's not as dumb as he seems. Perhaps he's inherited some of Scar's brains after all! I mean, he certainly understands the concept of the Circle of Life better than his father does. Now whether or not he remembers this lesson in the future...we'll have to see. And yes, Balondemu (a.k.a Cub C from here rarsa.deviantart.com/art/Possi… and my version of Kovu's father) is gay, while Scar is, in my TLK-verse, bisexual. If you don't like it, don't look. If I see any negative comments towards the LBTG community on here, they will be ignored and removed.
