Description "Oh, Father, dear, didn't you promise to take me, uh, Mufasa and me, hunting this morning?"
"Yes, I did, but I'm afraid it will have to wait."
"I'm tired of waiting! Something more important always comes up when you're supposed to take me somewhere."
"That's not true. Besides, being the Lion King carries great responsibilities. Your brother seems to understand these things."
"Mufasa gets all the attention! After all, Daddy's favorite is going to be the next Lion King!"

~ Taka (Scar) and Ahadi, TLK 6NA: A Tale of Two Brothers by Alex Simmons

~*~*~*~

I think this little banter between the "offical" version of Ahadi and Taka in TLK 6NA: A Tale of Two Brothers does a pretty good job of showing how my version of Ahadi and Taka tend to interact on a daily bases, up until Taka receives his scar. Ahadi isn't nessicarily an abusive parent, per say, but he tends to neglect Taka while showering praise and favor upon Mufasa. He tends to off-handedly compare the two as well, saying things such as "Mufasa can do _____, why can't you?" or "Mufasa understands _____, why don't you?" or "Mufasa is _____, why aren't you?" He also tends to break his promises to his younger son often, often coming up with excuses to avoid him (although in this instance he actually has a valid excuse: settling the arguments between the subjects during the drought before things get nasty, while Uru is off finding water). And then there's his short temper, which often causes him to snap at Taka when he doesn't intend to. Both his sons will inherit his short temper, though Taka to a slightly lesser degree than Mufasa (in other words Mufasa, like Ahadi, is more likely to get physical than Taka). In the end, Ahadi is more neglectful than abusive.

So while Ahadi's not the worst father in the world, he certainly is not the best, either. Eventually his short temper will get the better of him, and because of it he'll end up doing something to Taka that he'll regret for the rest of his life....

You also mentioned in an earlier piece that Taka reminded Ahadi of his abusive father, so that could be a subconscious factor...

It is indeed a factor. Taka reminds Ahadi of his abusive father physically and a bit in temperament, so although he loves Taka, he just can’t shake the feeling that he’s really talking to his father, not Taka. It’s something that haunts him throughout his life, and unfortunately he never really realizes the impact it has on others (mainly Taka) besides himself until it’s too late.
