I know the struggle for LGBT/race/sex/class/etc equality still has a long way to go, but sometimes I wonder if the Left is so addicted to cynical gloom that we're afraid celebrating something might cause withdrawal symptoms.Feel free to change the newspaper headline the next time this happens, as I'm sure it will.Β

Yes, we've got a lot of work to do, but you know what? We got a victory we worked for decades for. A lot of gay people just want to be treated with the same respect as straight people, just like a lot of women just want to be treated with the same respect as men.

But funny thing is that many who aren't radical Left feel the same way. Even the wishy washy liberal on Tumblr and Twitter knows that violence against transwomen is especially bad for transwomen of color and that being gay is especially oppressive if you're poor or nonwhite or just plain non-conforming.
I'm sure a lot of mainstream straight-acting gay men would find the idea of being a furry "perverted" or whatever. I hooked up with one of them once and it obviously didn't work out. His idea of kink was my idea of vanilla.

Yes yes and yes! I have seen so many negative comments about the marriage equality in the Anarchist subreddit, with anarchists whining about liberals and how gay marriage is not important, giving long critiques about how marriage is bad and not anarchist.Β

Honestly I just think it's shameful that the legal persecution went on for as long as it did, and shameful for the US that it took so much longer than other developed countries to recognize homosexuals as equal to heterosexuals.Β It's worth celebrating the fight of all the people who supported equality and I'm happy about that, but it's like struggling really hard and getting concessions from a bully.
As for being a cynic, they passed the TPP and most of the media didn't so much as whisper about it.
