Well, he did find many communists and sympathizers in the schools, hollywood, media, unions and even the state department. I'd agree it's incorrect, unless they are saying what the Dems really want is to uncover a massive conspiracy, and then be dogged for it for the rest of their lives and beyond, while the real issue is buried.

I'm pretty sure that, while there were Soviet spies in America, McCarthy himself got NONE of them.Β Heck, it was the opinion of Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, and even the KGB (in theΒ Mitrokhin documents) that McCarthy did more to DAMAGE anti-communist activities due to how wildly paranoid he was making them out to be.

The KGB basically had our shit pushed in on espionage since the 30s, through the cold war and have maintained that to this day where they still have an edge on us in many ways.
And you're partly right in doing damage to the anti-communist efforts. But it wasn't McCarthy who did the damage; rather the way media and hollywood fought back against him and were allowed to vilify him and re-write history.
And point of order; we are also talking about a man, who while correct to hound homosexuals as well due to the vulnerability their sexuality imparted to their positions at the time, did, in point of fact; also rigourously pursue those persons who WERE NOT communists, but possessed other traits making them vulnerable to blackmail and exploitation and found personal vindication in his own period-appropriate bigotry in so doing.
