Description
Illustration project - bookcover! I actually got to do something that I *wanted* to do! This would be a cover for one of the source books for my "Nor" world and game. The actual painting is much bigger. The whole premise of the image is that there is a halo of color centered around the hand and necklace, with the empty sepia ink lines running off. My scanner was too small to go behind the halo of color, and I don't have any graphic programs good enough to blend more than one section of the scanned painting together yet. That will come with time.

You get a real sense of dimension of the scales on her arm. The lighting of the amulet is also effective for pulling the viewer in.

Really awesome. Great composition and I love your color choices. Is this watercolor? Incidentally, this is along the same lines as my Halloween costume this year... krazy.

Yep, watercolor with nifty sepia-colored ink linework.
I'm curious about your halloween costume now. Enlighten me. o.o

<3 sepia. Nice.
Basically, I've got an elf getup (kind of earthtone Renaissance-y style) and I'm making Sculpey (polymer clay) prothetics, ie. horns, claws (which will be interesting, let me tell you), spikes, etc. Also, I have latex elf ears that I'll be fixing some scaley/spikey looking things to. Should look pretty cool if it all works out ... and gets finished on time...

Oooo....there anyway I could see it when it's done? Will pics be posted in your gallery?

Assuming it comes out okay I'll be putting up some pics, probably in my scraps. I'll be sure to note you with a link. ^__^
In the meantime, wish me luck!

Good luck!
If you have any questions or problems on assembling it, I might be able to help. I've built similar types of costumes and discovered some interesting materials and tricks that might come in handy if you run into any problems.

Thanks very much for the offer! I need to have it done by Saturday though, so I'm out of time to make many changes. My newest concern is whether the clay's too heavy (despite lightweight armatures) for the spirit gum. ... But, like I said, at this point it works or it doesn't.
Once you see it, I'd be curious how you'd have done things differently. I keep thinking of better ways to have done things, but I don't really have any experience with this sort of thing. It's quite an adventure.

Totally! I love this sort of thing. I eventually want to make a big gargoyle costume, complete with a custom set of fang/tusks and a tail that sways side to side.
Just send me a note when you have pictures!

I love the color scheme here; warm and relaxing at the same time. And it's nice that the dragon bits don't just cut off... that there are extra scales here and there. It looks like she's remembering something sort of sad, and reaching for her locket at the same time.... like she misses whoever's picture is inside.

It's ME!... with horns.. and pointyness. No, but seriously. Great work. Awesome expression in her arms and face.
If you have a digital camera, that could work, as well.

Absolutely, breath-takingly gorgeous. <3 I can imagine the halo of color you've described, but I really wish I could see the whole composition - it sounds lovely.
I've been working on my own dragon-lady sketch and this has inspired me to take it in a slightly different direction (if I go back to it.. doing twenty things at once!)
What did you use for the linework, to get it that sepia tone? And did you ink before or after your applied the paint?

Redpyre In reply to fetishfaerie-stock [2006-03-22 18:34:58 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the compliments!
I'm hoping to eventually hijack the illustration lab's scanner, or at least use photoshop on the computers there to blend the fragments I have. So, at some point I will have the whole thing.
As for the linework, I had grabbed up all these clearance micron pens at Michaels for a dollar each, thinking "whoa! micron pens for a dollar!" and didn't realize until I got home that they were all this weird reddish sepia color. I was disappointed at first, until I realized that they were way prettier than black.
I did all the linework before the paint, and then went back over a few places that had become dulled.
