Description
Just a tad old, but a piece I rather enjoy because what I tried in it. I should really revisit this style and technique again sometime, I see potential in it. :3These characters were once in an RP that my roommates and I cooked up. We were developing it into a story, but it died easily as independent group projects tend to do. :<

This style is by far one of my favorites, and every artist i see on dA who approaches this type of style usually returns to it somehow. It looks... fun. And you can easily fiddle around with it and make it dark, happy, etc.
Just one question for you. I know you used a tablet. but for the curvature of the tree, how did you get it to be so... smooth? like it looks like you didn't even use a tablet for that it looks like you used the pen tool or something. i've been trying to figure this out for a long time and i just don't know how. Is my tablet too small? WHAT GIVES!!? D: because I can do it traditionally. but digitally... i'm baffled. =/

No, you got it right! It was the pen tool. :3 I traced some of my drawing with the pen tool in Illustrator then brought the shapes into photoshop and locked the layer opacity. Then I was able to play with colors and patterns inside the shapes. x3 You can do a lot with layers and shapes regardless of what tablet you have, I assure you. :3

wait so this was first a pencil sketch then you scanned it into illustrator and pretty much just colored it and layered it in there?

Something akin to that. I make vector shapes with good curves then rasterize them. Lately I've been into just making solid painted shapes and not caring too much for super clean lines. Sorry for the late reply >.>; Been busy with college.

xD it's understandable mate. I've been busy with my college too.
But I guess that kinda makes more sense.
I'll have to try using Illustrator more for vector shapes. I've always been doing it in photoshop since i've been using it for the past 6 years. I'll see what I can try and experiment with. Not sure how to use illustrator though but i'll try and figure it out. If I need any help I'll try and get in touch haha.
Thanks!

So pretty! The composition is cool, it reminds me a Kay Nielsen's illustrations.

Mine too! Along with Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. I love the golden age illustrators, the gift book illustrators.

cool, this is a style that could go somewheres. I love how the characters are drawn, its simple and fluid. The only thing is the textures don't mesh with it..like the moss on the tree could be more stylized/flat. Use pattern instead of busy texture like that...like how the boat thing was done, it has pattern in the cloth and wood, and it looks like some texture in the wood but its subtle.
ok sorry I went on, hopefully its helpful though!

Hm yeah, I haven't revisited this sort of approach in a while because I haven't been sure of what direction to go with it. Thanks :3
