A/N- I can't believe I just wrote this. Anyway this was originally a request/trade sort of thing with my sister so I had to change some bits of the original story so it fit for a reader insert~! I didn't really want to do the whole [name] or __y/n__ thing 'cause I didn't want it to seem impersonal but yeah. I really hope you like it and don't shoot me when you finish~ Enjoy!

...

“Huhh...nng...” Hearing a wailing sound emitting from the room across the hallway from your bedroom caused you to stir from your sleep. You didn't mind; you hadn’t been getting enough sleep anyway so tonight would be no different, and you weren’t having all that pleasant dreams anyway. It was nicer to be awake, when you were asleep you couldn’t control what you were thinking about and some of the stuff floating around in your mind you’d rather stay away from.

Next to you Levi’s grey eyes fluttered open to look at your back as you sat on the edge of the double bed, debating with yourself when to gather up the urge to stand up and attend the weeping child just across the short stretch of hall. You’d left the light on and the door open for this particular reason; knowing your son would wake up and cry for you in the middle of the night meant it would be wiser to keep the light in the hall on so you wouldn’t trip on the loose floorboard Levi had never gotten round to fixing, and the door was open so you wouldn’t bash into it, again.

You shivered at the coldness on your feet and the feeling of cold air running down your spine, making your body shake and tingle. Levi watched with tired and heavy eyes as you took a great sigh, filling your lungs with air as clean as the house you lived in, before pushing yourself from the bed and stumbling in the dim light to find your way to the door. Your bones shook as the chilling air gripped them tightly and refused to loosen, so making another note in the back of your mind to insulate the house and clean the fireplaces better (as your husband painstakingly once showed you how) you trudged along the corridor, the screams and wails amplifying with every step you took and making you wince despite your dulled and tired senses.

The room was painted a cream colour, as you’d never found out what gender the baby was going to be before you had it anyway, and despite it being a few weeks since he’d been born you still couldn’t find the time during your maternity leave to paint the room. Honestly, you could barely even bring yourself to think about it seeing as it seemed like such a massive task, and you wanted your husband to have some part in decorating it anyway.

Peering over the small cot at the baby you smiled at him, and his wails immediately died down upon seeing you. He had his father’s dark hair and your bright eyes, and as he chewed on his fingers you sighed and reached down to gently lift him up. “See Levi...you weren’t really all that sad now were you?”

Some thought your name choice for the baby strange, others found it perfectly normal. What was weird about calling your precious child after another precious thing you had in your life anyway?

You sat down in the plush armchair in the corner of the room, looking over at the clean floor clear from clutter such as small toys and the tiniest specs of dirt, and smiled while you cradled your son, gently rocking him back to sleep. Of course you’d dedicated most of your time to making sure the house was immaculate, up to your husband’s standards at least. The overuse of all the cleaning products had led to you having skin peeling on your hands and arms and blisters on the palms of them. You didn’t mind though, it didn’t matter all that much just as long as your husband was proud.

Before you had noticed, your eyes had begun to fall shut, and as the baby fell asleep you did too. Drifting off you didn’t even notice the figure shuffling towards you and his son sleeping in your now relaxed arms. Feeling a coldness grasp your hands you sighed in your sleep as Levi took the baby gently from you, watching you all the while. He noticed how your chest rose with each long breath you drew, and each breath was long. You were exhausted, and he’d told you a lot to stop working so hard and cleaning so much; all you needed to do was look after the baby. But you never paid him any attention, and got on with it anyway. Overworking yourself was dangerous and he knew it, but you didn’t care.

Baby Levi squirmed in his father’s arms, and looking down at the baby Levi watched as his bright eyes fluttered open, his lips pulled downwards as he prepared to cry again. “Please, don’t cry. Ssh, don’t cry, it’s me.” He knew he’d never been an expert in soothing people, or even children, but he had a tendency to be kinder to anything smaller than him, and this baby was so tiny he could never even think of being anything but kind to him.

“Hn, hello Levi,” he knew it sounded weird, for his voice to be calm instead of stern, for his hands to be gentle when he’d once used them to kill. It felt weird to be a father, but at the same time it made him feel complete. Now he had two lives he cared for more than his own, and he would do anything to protect them. “I know you might not see me a lot...but, don’t forget about me, okay? Your mother is going to work very hard to look after you and I don’t want you giving her any trouble, right? Yeah...she’s brilliant, your mother, and she loves you very, very much. I love you too, Levi, so I just want to say, hello.”

He didn’t even notice the tears in his eyes as he looked down at his son, silenced in his hands and the faintest of smiles tilting his lips upwards. Levi made no sound as he leant over the edge of the baby’s cot and laid him gently in it, kissing his forehead and stroking back his already thick dark hair, ruffling it gently as the baby slowly drifted back off to sleep.

Your husband smiled, rubbing at his eyes which he noticed were wet before looking over at you, sleeping lightly in the armchair. “Tch, troublesome idiot...” he murmured, kissing your cheek and lifting you easily into his arms. He’d always called you an idiot, but you’d never minded it; you knew it kinda meant he liked you. When you were both in the military and you were charged with cleaning his room as punishment for some kind of other mistake you’d made he’d be forced to deal with the aftermath, your filthy clothes, sore hands, and cracked voice. He’d always take care of you when you’d overworked yourself, whether it had been in training or working with your squad. Him calling you an idiot was kind of his way of saying ‘you’ve done good, well done’ and you knew that so you’d still work hard and he’d still call you an idiot.

Of course he knew you weren’t an idiot, you were very bright and brilliant in combat. He’d seen how you’d slain Titans with ferocity and determination, your strike form proving to be flawless and managing to execute your manoeuvres perfectly and quickly. You were impressive, and he could see why your squad looked up to and greatly respected you.

It was a strange relationship you had with him to begin with; you knew it was strange since he was definitely a bit older than you and you’d had to sit and talk with him a few times to discuss what to do about your relationship since he confessed to you while drunk. No one else caught on for a while anyway but you didn’t care what they thought about it; to you it seemed right and that was all that mattered. Apparently it wasn’t ethical to date a colleague, especially a superior.

Levi laid you gently in your bed, pulling the covers up to your shoulders and placing a kiss on your lips. The coldness caused you to begin to stir and as your eyes fluttered open Levi’s began to water again. Slowly your eyes focused on his figure and your breath caught in your throat as he pressed his forehead to yours. “You’re so cold...” you noted, bringing a hand to hold his cheek, feeling the wetness of his tears. “Hey, hey...why are you crying?” Your voice was so soft and it felt as if he hadn’t heard it in so long and he couldn’t stop crying and he really didn’t know why, so he couldn’t answer your question and instead let small sobs shake his body and choked cries escape his lips.

“Levi, come here.” You shuffled over, pulling the covers back as he slid into bed next to you, ashamed to let you see him cry. He’d always wanted to be the strong one between the two of you, to pick you up when things got rough, but this time he couldn’t be. You held him tightly against you, his head resting in the crook of your neck as his cold breath ghosted over your skin, making goose bumps rise and causing you to shiver slightly. “Don’t be upset Levi,”

“He’s beautiful.” It was barely a whisper, but you heard it and smiled. You looked down at him and he looked up at you, his grey eyes now dry and his lips tilted upwards. “Just like his father, then.” Kissing his nose lightly you heard him sigh, and knew that wasn’t good enough so he leant up and pressed his lips to yours like he’d wanted to for so long. You felt it in the way his hands grasped your sides and his nose was mashed against your face.

He pulled away, and you noticed something was different about him. The glow in his eyes was fading, and the hands that grasped your own were becoming even colder. “N-No, Levi, please don’t...don’t do this...” It was your turn to cry now, but you wanted to see him, all of him before he’d leave so you rubbed at your eyes furiously. “I need you! The baby needs you I,”

“-I’m sorry, love. I guess, I’m finished here. I’m sorry I had to leave, I...I wish I could stay and help with the baby. Just, don’t do that thing you do when you’re trying to cope with pain and work too hard. Take it easy, okay? I love you, I’ll see you again one day.” His grip on your hand became loose, as if he was weakening, and desperately you tried to hold on to him. “I’m not interested in a life without you Levi. I can’t...”

“-You have to, for him.” Levi tilted his head towards the baby’s room, and you nodded slowly as your husband’s gaze became more and more distant. “Goodbye, love.” Pressing one more kiss to your lips you barely had time to whisper the words I love you before he disappeared, leaving the coldness he brought lingering on your fingertips and grasping at your heart.

The truth about the last expedition was Squad Levi had run into a group of aberrant Titans after being separated from the main group, and despite the best efforts of every member Levi Heichou lost his life protecting you and his future son, stopping any Titans reaching you. That was why he was so cold, and why his gaze was so distant. Aberrant Titans were always tricky, and to stumble upon a group of them, even for humanities greatest soldier, was too much. You never even got the chance to say goodbye, and your son never got the chance to say hello.

Tomorrow, you’d make it an imperative to visit his grave and lay down fresh flowers for him, and you’d tell your son exactly what his father died for and how brilliant he was. Life would be hard from now on, but you had your son and, right now, he was enough.
