Description
This season was quite the surprise. I remember the TBS era just being a continuous downward slope from the first season on the network, but I actually enjoyed a good number of these episodes. The quality does slightly dwindle toward the end, but not to the point where I stopped enjoying it.I think the main thing with this season is that the writing improved. Most of these episodes are coherent and are written pretty well, compared to season 10 or even the second half of season 9 where there were writing issues in a number of the episodes. Everyone also feels pretty in-character this season, and I think Roger has gotten better again this season. He's not the comedic powerhouse he was in the FOX era but I do like that they are upping how crazy he can get, without going too far with him. Heck, even the subplots are better this season. There's still some that are really awful and should have just been cut out, like the one in "Widow's Pique" where they have Principal Lewis beat up Steve and his friends for no reason, or "The Life Aquatic with Steve Smith"'s snooze-worthy subplot. But some of the subplots this season are genuinely good, especially the one from "The Ballad of Jesusworth" which alone brought that otherwise just decent episode into a really memorable one. If you love Steve singing then this subplot is a must watch for you, and it's also one of the funniest this season.
Despite all the good this season did, I'll be honest it had a very "average" feel to it. A lot of the good episodes here were just, well, good, but not great. There were only two episodes that stood out to be as truly great episodes. In-general, most of these didn't stuck out as being particularly memorable episodes of the show, but just simply ones that if they were on I wouldn't mind watching them. You can tell they are trying to recapture the magic of the show with a lot more weirder jokes and more out-there storylines, but most of these don't quite hit the balance the show reached in seasons 5-8. They somewhat do so, but not to the fullest extent. Again, these episodes have good writing and the humor is solid, but most of them just don't have that extra punch to them that would turn them from merely good episodes to classics.
So yeah, this was a fun, entertaining season. Unfortunately, this might not last because I remember the next season not being very good at all, but hey, the same could be said for this season, so maybe season 12 will also turn out better than I remember.
