Description This season reminded me of season 4, at least in terms of its quality. This season starts off extremely well and about on-par with the previous season, but towards the end there are clear signs of burn-out (and unlike season 4, these signs will become much bigger issues in the future).

The first half is still great. The show continues to ooze with creativity while still being able to engage in interesting stories, with some even having an emotional core such as "Steve and Snot's Test-Tubular Adventure" or "Independent Movie." I also noticed this season experimenting a bit more with much bigger episodes than usual. I honestly don't have much more to say because all this season does is continue what made the previous so good.

That being said, the quality of the season took a downturn after e13 ("I Ain't No Holodeck Boy"). There were a lot more episodes I didn't really care about, although thankfully none of them were bad (the only dud this season was actually "Kung Pao Turkey," which I don't feel like mentioning since like last season's "Max Jets" it feels like a momentary blip rather than a sign for things to come). The only episodes I truly loved were "She Swill Survive" and "News Glance with Genevieve Vavance," which were both hilarious. I think the issue is that the writing is getting a little sloppier. "Honey I'm Homeland," "Blagsnarst: A Love Story," and "The Longest Distance Relationship" both had really poor twists that hindered what were otherwise decent episodes, "Roger Passes the Bar" could've been a really cool episode focusing on something we haven't seen explored but ended up going in a rather generic direction, and "A Boy Named Michael" dumbed down Greg and Terry to a point where I couldn't enjoy the episodes as a whole, even with decent jokes throughout. The show is still funny, but I always appreciated American Dad more for how well-written its stories can be, so seeing the stories start to weaken at this point is pretty disappointing, and I know these small writing issues will soon become big writing issues as we enter the TBS era.

I also wanted to mention that I think Roger was pretty dumbed down this season, at least in the last couple episodes. The writers seem to think that he's just a brutish character who does evil shit for the sake of it, and while he is an evil character I enjoy him way more when he's creative about the evil stuff he does. The last couple of episodes were all Roger episodes but what made him click wasn't really there for any of them, and I also really did not like what he did at the end of "The Longest Distance Relationship" for the same reason.

I talked a lot of shit here, but this is still a really good season. It feels like a continuation of season 8 if anything else, but there's definitely warning signs of things to come as the season came to a close. The next season will be the first TBS season, and I remember not liking it, but maybe it'll surprise me. Hopefully that is the case.
