Description
Almost forgot about this lol. I've had this on the back burner for a few days but didn't upload until now.If I were to describe this season, it'd be that this is like a more refined season 7. Like season 7, this season isn't afraid to take risks, but I think the risks paid off here a lot more than they did in season 7. The dark humor here simply is much more creative and has an edge to it I can get behind. Not that season 7 had bad dark humor, but sometimes it'd come off too gratuitous, which I didn't feel in this season.
There's a couple other interesting things about this season. For starters, it's probably the most sincere season of the show. I noticed a lot of these episodes focus on characters other than Stan, and much of them actually have quite an emotional core to them. I think I said this in an earlier review, but because the show has already been able to reach the characters' comedic potential, they are perfectly ready to do some genuinely emotional episodes with them as well. To me, this is like the Simpsons Season 7 of the show, where it is still 100% a classic season (and even the best season) but the overall package does feel quite different. Despite having similar edgy humor as season 7, once again this is a surprisingly sincere season character wise.
I think the obvious example to evidence my previous point is the episode "Lost in Space," which is a true masterpiece and the best episode of the show. I don't really want to spoil this one because its one that should be seen without expectations, but its an episode that will truly hit you in the feels if you care about Hayley and Jeff's relationship, not to mention just being a visually amazing episode with a new location that's bursting of creativity and style.
Overall, this season was pretty cool. It does feel a little different from the seasons prior though. It does a lot of things differently, and I can see that being a turn-off, but I welcome a lot of the different things this season did. Not to mention that the show is still hilarious. Let's see if season 9 can continue the momentum.
