Despite being slightly lower than seasons 5 and 6, I'd still put this as part of the golden age, and this season actually does some things better than the previous two seasons did. Really, the only reason the rating is the way it is is because this season is kinda inconsistent quality-wise, but there is a reason for that.

Compared to the first six seasons, this season is definitely the most out-there, and pretty much every episode here with maybe 2 or 3 exceptions takes some sort of risk writing-wise. This is the season with Stan buying a haunted hot tub, the whole Smith house being swept in a hurricane, Stan turning a near-dead dog into an absolute freak, Stan and Francine spending 22 minutes in a poor neighborhood, etc. At its best, some of these efforts provided some of the funniest material in the show. At worst... well, I wouldn't necessarily say that at worst it sucked, because I only disliked two episodes this season, but this season could occasionally have an episode where I questioned a writing decision, or some of the jokes wouldn't land. For example, I mostly enjoyed "The Unbrave One," but wasn't a fan of the gag where Steve saved someone's baby, only to have that person and their baby die as Steve walks away. It's an example of dark humor I'm not too big on, and there's a few other episodes where I felt the show's risk-taking didn't 100% pay-off. This season also noticeably has much more gore than any of the previous seasons. Its not something that bothers me too much NOW but it is something that will become a big issue in the later seasons.

Aside from the show getting more edgier this season, all this season does is continue the great streak the previous two seasons started, with well-written stories, bizarre yet creative premises, and strong jokes. And again, this season actually has some of my favorite episodes, with three episodes I consider perfect. Let's see if season 8 can add a fourth season to this streak.
