Description Mid-2009 I was invited to Sydney by my realitives to spend a couple of weeks exploring and spending time with them. Our travels took us to the Zig Zag Railway in the Blue Mountains, To the war memorial in Canberra and to the NSWRTM (New South Wales Rail Transport Museum) at Thirlmere, where I took this photo.

This is just a small portion of what was on display there but as I wandered down the rows of now silent iron horses I couldn't help but feel that something had been lost. As they are they are just lifeless machines that are awaiting a chance to come to life again.

Well at least they're not outside rusting away as the sun beats down on them and wears the paint away.

indeed. Although there are some in their collection that we would love to see operating, such as No.78 (IIRC) which was the first steam locomotive built in Australia.

At least NSW has a decent and open rail transport museum. Ours is currently closed to the public with all the exhibits out in the open.

ah, the North Williamstown museum? I intended to to take a look at that at the start of December and they were closed. Yet their site says that it will be open 'early summer holidays' yet it is about 1/2 way through the holidays and it is still closed

This museum reminds me of the Pennsylvania Collection out in Strasburg for some reason...

Ah Yes, I've been to Thirlmere, I'm hoping to go there next year in time for 3801's return to Steam.

will these engines be revived?

most likely no, they are now museum exhibits and even if they do undergo some restoration it will likely be cosmetic work.

once 3801 and 3830 return to operation (both out of service, 3801 for another rebuild (mostly done) and 3830 with a cracked boiler stay or something) it will be much better
