Mycroft shifted around in his expensive chair uncomfortably.
"We're babysitting tonight?"
You sighed, sitting down on his thigh and planting a kiss to his forehead, trying to make your husband see the light in all this.
"I know, I know, we were gonna go out. But John and Mary haven't had any time to themselves in a while, and Sherlock is on that case in Ireland. We'll take Alice back home tomorrow morning. It'll be fun..."
"Fun."
He scoffed at the word.
"Let's just hire them a nanny or something. I'm sure I can find someone else to watch her-"
The door bell rung, and you jumped up to go get it, shooting him a grin.
"Too late."
"Mmf. Okay."

"Bye guys! Have fun!"
You shut the door and scooped the three year old up in your arms, tickling her and kissing her all over her face. Ignoring both of your laughter, Mycroft opened a crinkly newspaper and began to read it. Alice peaked her head around it, trying to see what was so interesting to look at. She tried climbing up onto his lap, but it was too high.
"Mycroft. Help her up onto your lap."
He was unfazed, so you came over and put her there yourself. At this Mycroft glared up at you.
"Take her off."
"No."
"Name!"
"Nope."
Poor Alice didn't know what was happening when he unceremoniously pushed her on the floor. She whimpered and gave him hurt, tear-filled eyes.
"Was I bad? I want to sit on your lap. I love you Uncle Mycroft."
Even the Ice Man couldn't help but feel a little guilty at this. The little girl... loved him? Love was always a strange thing to the man. A thing he had really only discovered when he met you. He had known Alice since she was a baby... But he was never exceedingly kind or really spent any time with her. Mycroft groaned, relenting. He picked her back up, and she smiled wide.
"Can you read to me?"
At first he thought this was pushing it, but you had already replaced his boring newspaper with a colorful picture book.

  The three of you made your way through Hungry Caterpillar, Knuffle Bunny, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive The Bus, and Green Eggs and Ham. Mycroft got more comfortable with you by his side, and you both took turns reading. You both got into it and read to Alice animatedly, rewarded by her reactions. Soon things started to slow down though, as Mycroft began reading Where The Wild Things Are. She snuggled into the crook of his arm and began to drift off, eyelids fluttering. Your husband paused reading when he discovered she was asleep, and looked at you, a twinkle in his eyes. He shut the book and you carefully picked her up so not to wake her.
"Here, lets put her to bed."
Mycroft came with you as you tucked her into the guest bed and kissed her forehead. He lingered a bit, long enough where you thought he might do the same, but he soon came back out into the living room with you. You yawned and stretched- all that reading had made you tired too.
"Go to bed, Darling."
"Come with me?"
It was 9:30 and usually Mycroft liked to stay up very late, but he decided to join you. You both got into your pjs and snuggled in bed. Who knew the man who was practically the British government was so cuddly?
  You smiled dreamily at Mycroft...
"Can we have a baby?"
He stiffened.
"No."
"Please? Didn't you enjoy it? You like Alice. Don't you want to have your own?"
"No. Did you only say we would watch her to try to convince me? Because the answer is still no. I don't like children."
"Please, Mycroft, I just want to-"
"Name. I said no."
Crestfallen, you flipped over, giving him the cold shoulder. He tried to put his arm over you but you slapped it away.
"Keep your hands to yourself."
He wound his arm around you anyways and turned you so you were facing him. You were crying. He wiped a tear away from your cheek and lightly kissed you on the lips.
"Why?"
You whispered, barely audible. He took a moment to think.
"Because-because...I can't be a father. I'm a very busy man. And I'm not very loving either-"
"Mycroft..."
"No, Name- think of how I used to treat you. How I still do sometimes. I'm a cold man. How am I supposed to love and care for such a small and delicate thing?"
"Mycroft. You are a wonderful man. You have more love and compassion inside you than you'll ever know. You do a wonderful job of loving me. And you pretend to not care about Sherlock's well being, but you do, more than anything. You are a great older brother and protector, so how could you ever say you wouldn't be a wonderful dad? C'mon, let's have a baby."
You kissed him slowly and passionately on the lips, and you felt him relax.
"Okay?"
He kissed you this time.
"Okay."
