Oh, shit...!As much as I can understand Capcom's decidion about changing background story for some characters in the new RE2 remake - I just wish they sticked with Leon's day-before break up story which was making it more interesting.

What was originally planned out for Leon's backstory?

Well, adding to what I wrote in the description - day before his planned first day as a police officer at raccoon city police department Leon broke up with his girlfriend at the time. Supposedly due to a huge fight that they both had. And so he later gets drunk and stays the night at the nearest motel. He wakes up to a hangover ,of course, and as it turns out - he is also late for his shift.

I Think that they're trying to "renew" the expectations about the character, because a lot of things that he does in the game is very different from what we originality think that he do. In a certain scene - and here i enter in the "SPOILER ZONE": he receive a kiss from Ada, but his face is nothing that i would expect from the original Leon, because after the kiss, Ada tells him something important that she needs him to do it, but his expression and the 6 seconds of silence bringing a "false" and simple answer "... okay", tells me that it's a different character. The past of Leon is different, he's a man of focus now, so i think the "narrative perspective" is beginning to become something different in the series, and i kinda like it. I Like new thinks, i like experimentation, not only on the mechanics but in the story, in the characters being more human, having more "human" dialogues, so i kinda want to see where this is going, this new perspective.

I finished the game few days after premiere. It was one of those scenes that I couldn't wait to see in remake. Of course it was cinematic now and in realistic style, lines were changed as well - but to be honest, I didn't expected it to be JUST like in original game. I somewhat hoped that she would say the memorable "I'm just a woman that fell in love with you", but eventhough those words didn't make it there - I'm somewhat happy. And maybe it's for the better that the scene was being suger coated too much. As you mentioned, and which I like myself too, is that capcom is trying to make characters appear more human-like.
Also, about Leon's reaction...frankly speaking, I wasn't surprised at all. He's confused. Has good heart and willing to give a helping hand. If that wasn't enough for him to get into trouble - by the way he looks at Ada you can tell that he is somewhat attracted to her. So I can understand his hesitation and confusion after she kissed him. She is messing with his head. He could be thinking to himself that this sudden change in her behaviour is suspicious. But the more she is tempting him the more that voice of suspicion is being silenced. And so the emotions take over and he bends to fullfill Ada's request. He is naive, but not entirely stupid.
It was very interesting to see Leon before the things started getting into his psyche - as we can observe from the event in later history. He may not be emotionaly distressed from the break-up with his girlfriend and thus as much vulnerable, but I don't see a drastic change in his character afterall.

Yeah, i agree he comes off as a boyscout this time. Personally, I really dislike what they did to Ada. Sure, half the audience didn’t play RE2, but what made Ada so aluring was that she was a seductress, you knew she was leading you along but you couldn’t help yourself but fall into her web.

She wasnt as sophisticated and professional. It felt like capcom cut the story too short and Ada's character was misrepresented, sure.
But this time she actualy got me feeling bad for her and got my affinity. For me personaly her more human-like version of her worked more. At this point, you need to know that I never realy liked her to begin with

Actually Leon comes off a lot smarter. He doesn't follow Ada like a love sick puppy, he's more surprised than anything when she kisses him. He actually believes Annette when she tells him that Ada is just a Mercenary. That stand off could have very easily ended with him shooting her dead on that catwalk. really his upset at the end was more due to camaraderie and his feeling of duty as a police officer.
I love how Capcom themselves are shipping Leon and Claire now. The way they interact, and especially at the end when Sherry asks them if they're boyfriend and girlfriend and they remark that it would have been a hell of a first date, before they all walk off into the sunrise holding hands and Sherry talking about them adopting her and buying a puppy and a parrot. Doesn't get much more obvious than that.
