Description
"If we can store music on a compact disc. Why can't we store a man's intelligence's and personality on one?"I stop the recording of Mr. Johnson's tapes. I glance through the window of the operation office. The scientists were working on The Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. AKA GLaDOS. It seems one of the cores we stuck on her to keep her in line malfunctioned. My Co-Worker and fellow reasearch scientist Arthur Kirkland walks back into the office. Looking back through the glass as I was.
"The Wheatley core seemed to be completely rejected." he sighed.
I look up at the Brit. The Wheatley core was used to simplify GLaDOS. Making her less intelligent.
"Maybe this is one of those signs Rattmann has been warning us about." I said turning back to my computer screen. Arthur scoffed. "The bloody git truly doesn't see the vision going into this project." I mentally sigh at his comment. I don't blame Rattmann. This whole project was giving me a huge weird vibe. Like I should back out of it and just go home.
Arthur put a hand on my shoulder, bending over to the computer screen and pointed. "Pull up plan B in the document folder. This should finally settle her down." He asked. I click my other project down and clicked "Plan B". It was a blue print for a Morality core. "Send it to the fellow scientists and we'll put it on her." Arthur instructed. He never called GLaDOS by her name. It was always "Her" or "She". I knew sure enough that Arthur was just as unsure as I was. I quickly send the file. "Arthur, will she really be stable in time for Bring your daughter to work day? It seems we should wait a little longer." The British man chuckled patting my shoulder. "Love, everything will be fine and operational in due time. Mr. Johnson's idea will finally be realised." Arthur smiled.
I.. I wasn't so sure. I pull back up my other project. Earning a curious eye from Arthur. "Alfred?" he muttered. Poking his head once again over my shoulder. I smile a little. "It's a experiment."
"Are you trying to achieve artificial intelligence on a android?" He asked reading the rest of the blueprint. I nod. "We're only using this advantage on Cores and GlaDOS. Even on the still in development P-Body and Atlas. What about on a working human android?" I explained closing out of the document. I lean down into the drawers pulling out a disc with the name Alfred marked onto it. "The test subject of Alfred F. Jones volunteered his Intelligence and personality onto this disc years ago. Before I worked here."
Arthur took the disc momentarily. "This must date back to the time we're still figuring out how to use this technology for Mr. Johnson was still alive. This might be defected."
I shrug, grabbing the disc back. "Still worth a shot." I grin.
--
Hours passed working tirelessly, running system checks. Checking for any hiccups to indicate that GLaDOS may reject the Morality core. With much success, GLaDOS didn't reject the core and responded well. This ment Bring your daughter to work day will run as scheduled for tomorrow.
I say my goodbyes to the Arthur and the other scientists and head back to my office. I've been staying many tiring nights working on my experiment and today may just be the day.
As I eagerly go to my office. I stop to see a few scientists bickering down the hall. I approach them with a curious smile. "Any problems?" I ask. One scientist scoffed at me. "There damn sure is." I put on a frown. "Is it Test Subject 1498?" I questioned, raising a curious brow. They nod and sigh.
"She's too stubborn for her own good." The other scientist said.
"Of course, but she is a damn fine Test Subject. At least she's not dying like the rest." I retorted.
The two scientists rolled their eyes and shook their heads. "You just don't understand." one mocked. I furrow my eyes a bit and open my mouth a bit to give a stern reply, but turn away fuming. I'd rather not lose my good reputation to these guys... Is it because I'm still new? Also of course that Test Subject is stubborn. What did they expect? She's been here her whole life, not saying hardly anything and they expect her to throw a few tests in the name of science! She has a will to live. She is incredibly smart. She's performing the tests as asked. What more do they want from her?
I go to my office, shutting and locking it behind me and sigh of relief. It felt like home, I worked my ass off to earn point with the big wigs. I want to show them how much potential I have in this company. Be the next great innovator or Cave Johnson was. Day in and day out I struggle to make a great reputation for myself, but today was finally the day to install Alfred.
I plop myself in my chair turning my computer on. I spin around to a huge vault. I open it to reveal a tall blonde, muscular human android covered in wires connected to my computer. I grin looking at my creation. He was just a android now, but once he was installed. Alfred will shape instantly to his former human form's personality. The only tricky thing was crafting his physical features and honestly I really did out did myself because he looked like his profile picture.
I twirl back to my computer opening Alfred's file and put the disc in. The option to installed popped up. I glance back at the lifeless android and gulped look back the enormous bright computer screen.
"Please work.. Alfred..." I whisper clicking the installation button.
1%... 20%... 45%...
Hours ticked as I waited eagerly at my desk. Staring at the bar. The android shell fidgeted, soft beeps preparing his boot up.
50%... 68%... 80%...
I eyes begin to droop, no noticeably changes to the android. I glance at the clock as it read 6 AM. Gosh has it really been that long? Well his data is old, but... I stop my thought as I begin to yawn softly.
90%... 95%... 100%!
A loud beeping rung from the computer. I wake up immediately from my desk and stared at the computer screen. "It's done?... It's done!" I squealed in thought and dart my eyes at the android.
... Still an empty, lifeless shell just as I left it. "Oh.." I sigh in disappointment.
I guess the data was too old or defected. I frown even harder. All that work... Wasted.
My eyes look at the clock, it read 11 AM. I yawn again and stretch out of my chair. "Well, I guess I should go see Bring your daughter to work day.." I mumble.
As I was about to reach my computer and turn it off. The alarms rung loudly throughout the facility. I bolt to the door, looking through the small window. Scientists passed out in the halls, distant agonizing screams, a green mist lingering around the air. I cup my hands to my mouth. Eyes widening.
N-Neurotoxin' I thought in horror.
I look down seeing the toxin seeping in. I felt faint at the sight... Was it her? Did the morality core... Fail?
"I'm going to die" I whisper through my hands. My eyes closing slowly as the neurotoxin engulfed the room. I push myself against the corner of my room, sliding down, my eyes blurred. My breathes felt shorter. This was it.
What may of seemed like hours waiting for death, I then suddenly felt a shadowy presence pick me up. My body lost all of it's strength, so I just let them carry me.
I only assumed that it may of been the grim reaper to end this suffering.

Great fic! I hope there's more.
Oh! And quick grammar tip, since I see this mistake often: Use "a" when the word after it begins with a consonant (like t, b , n, m, etc.), and "an" when the word after it begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u).
So for this sentence: "It's a experiment."
It should be written as: "It's an experiment."
