Description After long last and many requests, I finally made a corset making tutorial. Keep in mind that there are LOTS of different styles of corsets. For the corset in this tutorial, I used a altered version of this pattern: [link] and got my boning/grommeting supplies from here: [link]

You can use a lot of different kinds of boning for corsets, I just happen to prefer very severe steel hoop boning. You can also order boning pre-cut and tipped, though I often find that in the end, I don't have quite the right sizes, so I prefer to do it myself. Many of the plastic bonings can be sewn straight to the cloth, but that's not as cool (or authentic) as making channels.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! You can see the finished corset here: [link]

so you have to sew it together in the front to avoid the backward busk... hmmm... i wonder if there is another way to do it and keep a busk in it.

I'm not trying to cheat you out of commissions or anything. I was just wondering. How much did it cost you to make that corset?

Hmm...the client paid for all the materials, so I'm not exactly sure. I would guess around $40-$50 in materials, 5-6 hrs. in time.

How do you measure and cut the pieces depending on the persons actual waist size? say you were makeing it for someone with a 22 inch waist what would the "waist" area measurement be on the pattern itself?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Reine-Haru In reply to shadowcat-666 [2011-05-30 17:21:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, consider that you have to add 5/8" to each edge of the pattern pieces for seam allowance, so multiply 5/8 by 2 by the # of pieces you have, and that should give you a good idea. Or, what I would do is make a mock up in muslin, adjust as you see fit, and then alter the pattern from that.

Thank you for the tutorial
I have a question though, I am new to making clothes (fff this would be my first thing unless you count sewing clothes for my barbies when I was little xDD) and I was wondering how do you do the measurements? Do you add any inches on for better comfort or? xD Sorry for asking a stupid question, I'll probably be doing that a lot when I get around to starting this. lol

Hi
We just sourced some boning.
[link]
7mm wide.
Is the boning you use stiffer than this or the same? We wee looking for severe boning.
I did ask your suppliers but got a "look at our selection" type reply.
Cheers for any help

I think that the stuff I use (steel hoop boning) is actually more severe than this. Hope this helps!

Yes, I've made bags before, but I don't make them too often, because honestly, they're kinda boring. I'd be happy to sketch out a pattern for you, just let me know what style bag you're wanting.

TheHarlequinRomance In reply to Reine-Haru [2009-08-26 19:35:51 +0000 UTC]

Ill look for those. but okay.
away fromt he bags.
with corsets how do you determine where to place the bones?
Im thinking about where I should put mine and I cant figure out where to put them.
Im using the elizabethan corset generator site casue Ive hearda few good things about it but where they say to place the bones is a little much. THe outline placing they have would be using approxamately 44 of them. and WHOA. so any ideas?
