Description For: Hope you like it!!

And I pose a question to you fellow onlookers; what does it mean when doggo pirates hang up pirate flags with human skulls painted on them?

A. human pirates share the same concept to dogs, as animal maskots are to humans, thus it might be "cute" to have the skull of a human as symbol
B. human skulls are scarier than fellow animal skulls, because humans are the nr.1 predator, thus it means these scary doggo pirates are capable of killing humans
3. humans have long since died and pirate doggos are big fans of the originals and honor them by using their symbolism
D. other? (comment!)

These were the thoughts that ran through my head while initially just drawing what I was requested to do: a "pirate skull", but then a sudden enlightenment; if the pirate is a dog, wouldn't the skull then be that of a dog? Upon quick review I was given an 'ok' on doggo skull design
....and that would probably be less complicated to explain

youve helped me once already, but is there any chance i could get some tips on drawing paws? i used to think i was pretty okay for my skill level, but looking at this i would never dare to draw one with such confidence because i really dont know what im doing, while for you drawing paws seem to be your forte. i can crap out human hands like no ones business, but these weird dog hands have always plagued me.

Sure! But damn, don't think that this has always been like this,, I'd say this is now just the second time where I felt like I actually understood what paws should actually look like and that I managed to convey that properly. In the end it was just by looking at actual reference recently that I absorbed snippets of extra visual information, that made me aware of how things should be angled/at what length etc. And it can be real subtle things too, for example that one front paw viewn from the side, looked too stubby and small at first, even though the toe length seemed correct,, and I realized that I had made the angle of the front digits slightly too perpendicular. By merely putting them in a slight angle it already looked much better.
I know too well what it feels like when seeing people who can seemingly make any random doodle look realistic (like people speed sketching human faces) while when trying to draw the same thing, even the slightest wrong line seems to ruin the whole thing. In the end, I think, it's the difference of knowing what the drawing should feel like (it's shape, depth and form)
For example I've always drawn paws like they're walking on the whole flat of their "hands", while it normally should look more nimble, more like they're walking on only the front half of their feet.

Maybe by showing this older piece, it'd be more clear what I mean by that: Commission:. Projectoblivion
Visually the main anatomical difference was; making the paw shorter in length, getting rid of that extra angle between wrist and digits; and maybe making the whole thing a bit more compact/sturdy looking.
Extra details like the upper "knuckle" above the claws, and the way the fur hangs like curtains either side of the claw, are stuff you might only think to include when drawing a close-up of them.

In the end, doing studies of real life reference is still a major factor to improvement ;-;" that time I looked at some reference to do paws and legs properly was only prompted because I wanted to add extra detail to a commission I was working on, so it wasn't even done with the intention of learning

very helpful as always. i think i know what you mean by a more sturdy looking paw. i actually have the opposite problem because all of my paws look too stiff, and i cant get that natural feel in. as for that old picture, while its clear that the paws arent correct for their purpose, i still love the look of them, and how fluid they look might actually help me more than anything else. i think ill just try to make my paws look organic first, and then ill worry about perfecting the anatomy. after all, anything can look good as long as it looks like it fits. fake it till you make it.

I think the doggos just think that human skull symbols are really cool but they don't actuallyΒ know that it's a skull, because they've never seen a human skull before.
I absolutely love the pose, it's so dynamic!!

Thank you!! It's simply that most of what I currently work on is entirely dependant on what other people want since I'm mostly focusing on commissions right now,, but once I'm done with the current list I'll have the energy to start working on more elaborate drawings too ;>

it looks so fluffy...

I vote 3 but in a kind of reverse "The animals probably killed them in the war against humanity and thus use the human skull to show how metal they are as a middle finger to humanity" type thing.

I like the concept of 3. (Although I think you mean c) that the humans had died and the dogs soon evolved to were they could soon rule the high seas but still have respect for the original pirates who once ruled it ;3;Β
Β Although I think it would be a mix of human skulls and dog skulls. The human one as the main large flag on the ship for respect but maybe like you drew it the dogs wore the dogs skulls as a sign of them belonging to their own piracy.... idk I'm rambling on here ;0;Β
Β
Β Also the drawing is amazing! I love the perspective and I love when ever you use blue tints for shading :>Β

because breaking the regularity of a system you're familiar with by inserting a variation that has no reason is good for you and makes life more interesting
or it's just a trope, and im meme-trash that isn't above using over-used jokes ;-I
