Description ....can you spot the one artwork that is referencing some specific japanese media? I think it's very well camouflaged

im currently working on 2 pieces that will be birthday presents for some rad folk (im of course very late, which is why i made that one extra version as an "update" ) and i up till now wasnt sure if i should post them when they are done, since most people would probably be very confused if I suddenly start posting fanart. But I guess it doesnt matter much and I'll just post them anyway ;T

mmmm lots of observation and oogling cool styles,, "fake it till you make it" draw like you know what you're doing (while you actually have no idea)
I didnt start with focusing on leveling up my anatomy skill levels or rendering; shadow/lighting levels, (those came bit by bit as time went by) but I rather focused on my improv skillz

thats in any case how i tried to get by, which worked for me because im too lazy to do actual focused studies. It might not work for everyone tho, one negative would be that it might take much longer,, there are different ways to improve :I
(btw I've learnt that the "fake it till you make it" style of improving doesn't work that well with animation either, because it's like 100 times more clear when theres something off e _e"")

Well, what exactly do you mean when you say "referencing my style"? And is "getting the hang of it" a clear moment in time that you'll be able to point out? I'm wondering because I myself wouldn't claim that I've gotten where I 100% want to be yet either.
In any case, I believe that using someone else's style 1 for 1 isn't very efficient in helping you how to get there yourself x: the shapes I imagine while making lines and squiggles and the experiences I've made through errors and re-do's, won't automatically transfer over to you.

I do recommend analyzing styles you admire to try and figure out how to evolve your own style from that,, but the key element is to look at many different styles, as opposed to just one.
I'm not a perfect artist, and I take plenty of shortuts or easy way outs. I have flaws and bad habits, so looking at a bunch of different artist and picking out only your favorite bits, mixing them together, or building upon them yourself, would serve you much better.

If you don't know of any similar artists, you could try glancing through my favorites: remarin.deviantart.com/favouri… though just as a disclaimer, I've lately been admiring painterly styles, so more line-dependant ones might be just sprinkled here and there.

This might sound weird but i absolutely love seeing your sketches of creatures with their mouths wide open, screaming to the void...

How to draw big screm:
step 1. draw a nice curve for the gaping mouth shape
step 2. add the main "front" teeth at the bottom and the top
step 3. ....draw the rest
