For some reason the Mig-25 and Mig-31 have always caught my eye despite few jets achieving that. Love the painted look to this one. What's the flap sticking up behind the cockpit? It looks like an air break but that would be bad on take off.

It's a mirror of operator's periscope. In MiG-31second crew member has almost none front overview but has a reduced joystick to control the aircraft in case ofΒ emergency by looking in his periscope.

That explains it. An interesting and low tech solution for the problem. That said I wouldn't want to fly a plane by periscope. Β Thank you for the explanation.
