Description I figured that before I go out on vacation, and thus have no access to a scanner, I put another set of my sketchbook drawings into my scraps again.

I don't practice expressions very often, I should probably amend that. I remember from the commentary with the last set of oneshots, a question if Dawnaria (the fire elemental griffen kaiju) is capable of expression. Generally, birds are not capable of much expression at all. However, the eyes are at least half of what makes all expressions possible and so by giving Dawnaria big fluffy flaming eyebrows, it becomes possible for her to show a wider range of emotion or at least the basics.

Top I started out just neutral/battle ready and seeing exactly how the eyebrows would play out on her head. predatory birds and bird like creatures generally have a visor brow that focuses their vision so it's a natural groove to build brows on. Once I decided to make this an expressions practice page, I did a sorta shocked/puzzled look, a morose/depressed, a side splitting laugh/silly, pyromania/enraged and brooding/angry. The mane of fire that goes down her neck and back also helps add a layer of expression, simmering, smoking, smoldering, flaring and flat out exploding depending on her mood. You can also seein the brooding/angry that she fumes pitch black smoke from her nostrils which like most birds is located above the beak rather than down near the tip like a dragon's would. Her eye's glow so the intensity can change the lightning of her face as well.

Hope this was mildly entertaining for you all. I now have to sleep.

Very cool, Ren. It's hard to make predatory birds have expressions beyond angry and serious, but you've pulled all of these off admirably. The surprised one and the irritated one are my favorites.

Thanks, things like Shimaku have even more trouble but thankfully he's got deep eye sockets that allow for eye movement so some eye hints can be given. Things like Duskizen though...lol no. Beelz indicates his mood via the light relfection off his compound eyes so he's got that covered. The eyebrows in Dawnaria's case really help.

That's definitely loads more expressive.
I especially like that enraged one, it's very dynamic.
On the other hand, the laughing one just looks weird.

Yeah, it's more like a 'choked on a cookie' kind of face. If I had room on the page I probably could have done one with upturned eyes and arched brows to show a more amused expression.

Hard to believe she's a good monster. She looks down right vicious!

Most of my monsters do lol. Griffens are fierce creatures in general even if Dawnaria is fittingly cheery and spontaneous most of the time.

The big bushy eyebrows go a long ways to make him emotive. Such as the 'You have got to be kidding me!' in the bottom right.

Yeah, definitely work wonders in making her capable of expression.

Of course there is always the slightly fleshy corners of the beak, many animated artists use that area to express emotions in avians.

I'd rather use it to tear flesh lol . But that is a possible way to use it.

I meant near the base of the beak, where it is a bit more fleshy.

That's where the nostrils are and it doesn't move much. The lower beak meanwhile dips a bit into the face where the jaw hinges.

Okay, that was my fault, I was not communicating as well as I should have been. That was what i meant, the hinges.

It would probably work best on a frog kaiju for obvious reasons .

hehe, fun. This certainly amends my concerns, she has a lot more character visible to her like this. Kinda adds some owl into her a bit as well, at least when seen from the front. Aria certainly is a gregarious one, .

I think a lot of owl characters in fiction inspired this somewhat so I can definitely see that.
