Description So finally, after many sketches and agonizing over what the hell his freaking head should look like, I present SD Obsidius. Frankly Ob's needed this pretty badly. He had a great concept that alot of fans agreed with and he brought something new to the Godzilla universe; its very first elemental kaiju. However his execution was rather flawed and for something named 'Obsidius' he didn't look like he had alot to do with the mineral's namesake. His roar was generic and his playing style in the game felt like he was trying to be King Kong. Whatever, point is he had problems and thus he has to best of my ability been remedied.

Those who have checked out my sketch studies already know about my comparisons between the Millenium, the Neo, and various hybrid versions. It was an important process that helped me figure out his key aspects and most glaring flaws. Things Obsidius must have are:
- head horns
- lack of facial features
- cavernous mouth
- powerful, brutish build
- a good sized tail with a asymmetrical 'fork' on the end.
- appears to be made up of volcanic plates divided by frequent lava cracks
Things that made Obsidius 'suck'.
- Entire body was rather dull and flat; looked more like a living mountain side than a volcano.
- tail was rather short
- mouth was unable to close thus invited weakness to internal detonation or freezing.
- Dude just wasn't mean looking enough.

Those things are apparent from just the Millenium version. The Neo by Matt Frank solved a majority of those problems but lost the powerful arms and despite his best attempt, still couldn't completely solve the issue of the unclosable cannon mouth. What's interesting about the Neo is how well it fits in with the story. Both Krystalak and Obsidius are said to be created from the space crystals that fall to earth. These crystals are apparently linked to Space Godzilla. Thus it would make sense that monsters created from the crystals would have aspects of Space Godzilla's appearance. Krystalak is rather obvious with the crystal tuft on his tail and being literally covered in crystals. Obsidius on the other hand got the tri-horn arrangement on his noggin and the massive shoulder structures; which in this case take the form of volcanic craters. Even then, I still wasn't feeling the 'insidious' aspect of Obsidius so I went to the drawing board...

And eventually came up with this. Its in SD form but the change is evident. Being made partly from obsidian, Obsidius needed to be sharp and jagged where it counted. He also got a darker color scheme that further accenuates his molten interior. The powerful arms are as much a part of his character as his mouth so they stayed and got layers of obsidian shrapnel sticking from them. You know how pit fighters wrap tape around their hands then dip them in shattered glass? Same idea. A back hand from Obsidius is going to leave VERY sharp blades in your face. His build is gorilla like, since he seems to like fighting that way. His tail is longer and a viable weapon. The spinal ridge from the Neo was very cool so that became part of him as well. The final thing was the mouth. Some like the cannon, some like the jaw. I'm a jaw person, I can't help it. If it moves like a gorilla, fights like a gorilla, and beats its chest like a gorilla than it should be able to bite like a gorilla. So Ob's has a jaw, and vertical obsidian fangs to make that feature useful. He can still open it to reveal the circular flame cannon of doom but when he doesn't need it, he doesn't have his insides visable for anything with a freeze/death ray to take advantage of. The tusks are a personal touch of mine, they make him look even more primal.

The background took effort. I drew those rocks damnit. I was going for a sense of perspective, movement and power. Something I haven't done since SD Gorosaurus. I tried several poses but eventually settle with this one. Its a little odd but it works. Being a elemental, he's got a volcano and lava and exploding rocks all over the place. I would have had smoke belching from his shoulder craters but there is just so much stuff going on here that it was distracting. Gregole is already disappointed that I'm not making a shwoop da woop joke but Godzilla actually shoots big blue lasers and I don't want to reuse material . Instead I'm making a Hulk joke. Obsidius is powerful, straight forword and just 'feels' angry. Sound familiar? Besides, any excuse I can come up with to show things exploding is good in my book.

I think that Obsidius and Biolante should be a couple. What do you think?

Oh, and to me, Obsidius is just like the Hulk, only evil.

This is just bad- oh wait, what was the word again? Oh well. This would have been much better than what we got, and he should have the tapping projectile as like a Magma Rock Throw or something, where he would grab a big piece of rock covered with magma and just throw it (requires an energy cell). And what's this, he can do it in the ice too?

This is like what Mt. Doom would look like if it could walk.....

Beastly stuff, despite how you've already heard that plenty of times. Obsidious is the next Go G entry, so I was looking through what people had come up with, and I can say, this one will help me a lot.

Glad to be of service lol. I was always amused at how -smooth- Obsidius always looked, even in his concept art. Obsidian is a rock that splinters into razor sharp edges with a dark glossy look. Obsidius ended up looking like a lava elemental that got sent through a tumbler and spat back out. Not to mention something with a cannon for a face has practical weaknesses in the dozens as just about anything can be shot down there and attack his core. If they were going to combine the words 'obsidian' and 'insidous', they could have at least made him look much more lethal and dangerous than he ended up looking. The generic roar didn't help.

Being that you like the haze effect, this kaiju should be fun for you. Like Burning Godzilla but minus the eyes and more rock.

Ooh, I like this design alot more than the Unleashed one, the one in unleashed looked plain just like you said. If only he would've looked like this in the game(maybe they've gotten lazy : p )

RenDragonClaw In reply to Sephiroth59 [2009-02-24 06:21:16 +0000 UTC]

Lazy just about sums up what happened to Mr. 'I-won-the-poll-lol'. There wasn't anything all that distinct about him that made him really connectable to the player, his roar was a generic as generic can get, the lack of rage attack in the game made him all that more bland, finally his design itself had some serious flaws which various kaiju fans here have already talked about.

I just took what made him memorable at all and put it into a more feasible and functional form. He's made of obsidian? Put some jagged edges on him. He's got a big mouth? Let him close the damn thing. Got an ape like posture? Thats cool, let the primordial beatings begin. He's made of freaking molten magma too? Well hell, add some symbolism and erupting stuff with plenty of lava veins and there you go.

Obsidius is an elemental, he's a primordial force of nature. He's vagugely humaniod and made of a specific mineral among other things and he's got lava for blood. It really wouldn't have been that hard to run him through the design process on more time. The fact that they used the Orga model for him on the Playstation version was just sad. Glad to find there's another fan that feels the same way about the guy. Good idea, bad execution lol.

I agree, I've guess when there's a contest going on, some people don't even bother to take the time and effort to put much thought into the design and character and are eager to get it shipped(I mean, I'll still give props for the artist for the design of the monster, it's just that I think he should've put more effort into the monster design).

I mean your version looks alot more kickasser, it has more thought and effort put into it and makes the original artist look like kidsplay which is a good thing. Yeah, the roar could've been more original rather then just giving him those cheap monster soundeffects roar. I also thought that his breath attack should've been more liquidily(similar to biolantte's breath where her's spreads a little and looks more liquid-like, kind of like some the concept art of him that's flying around the web), rather then godzilla like only poorer, thus making it the most damaging breath attack in the game. overall they didn't even bother to try to give the breath the liquid-like appearance. And yes, I whole-heartly agree with the rage attack, I think there should've been like a eruption-type attack for his special.

It's a good idea though, but yeah, it was totally poorly executed(I've gotta look into the PS2 version to see what he looks like, hopefully there's a youtube vid on the site...Somewhere).

A Fire/volcanic/eruption attack would have worked great. Baragon already has the actual volcanic geyser thing that sends dudes into the air providing he does it right underneath them. That was another thing that pissed me off about Unleashed, the lack of grabbing people when your burrowed. Took the piss and vineger right out of Baragon and Megalon respectively as it was a part of their combat style. Now its just a handy escape method .

I'd imagine Obsidius being in a similar vein but opposite direction. Instead of making a volcanic geyser, he'd do an epic punch into the ground and a massive field of lava cracks would emerge and temporarily turn into lava that would entrap and horribly burn whoever didn't get out in time. Fits his brutish and fire element nature and it would also allow a brief moment for him to wade in and smash them even further into the dirt. Hardest thing for Obsidius are people who play distance games with him, his rage attack keeps them from going anywhere so he can come in an lay the apocalypse on them.

Agree with you a more 'explosive' breath weapon. It just came out as bits of rock and fire, like an over sized super soaker. With a mouth that fucking huge he should be able to bowel over dudes with his mouth cannon, seriously. I mean, Godzilla has a concentrated 'Shoop Da Whoop' laser for a breath weapon, it wouldn't be all that much of a stretch for Obsidius to compete in terms of short range concussive force due to the caliber of his 'barrel'.

I'm glad I was able to make him more impressive than his origins made him out to be.

"Obsidius Smash!" seems to fit him, too. He just doesn't strike me as being very bright. XD

I really racked my brain for a better look for him. Eventually I settled on that one because it was close to the original as I could stand and still had the general improvements that I wanted.

The Hulk joke is a tad old but it works considering his always beating his chest and pounding on things. Besides, he's made out of rock, that should speak for itself .

Yes, and despite the aiming glitch regarding Kiryu's Absolute Zero Cannon and the a few other minor things, I greatly enjoyed it. The red-blue-green set up they originally had for the beam fights was not missed. Overall it was a good sequel that brought some fresh faces and could be labeled as the Wii's first fighting game. Only thing I really missed were the rage attacks. Only Kiryu, Mecha King Ghidorah and the vastly overpowered Destoroyah have access to them as normal attacks. The crystal powerups are cool but they lack the flare the rage attacks did. Nothing was as awesome as bringing your foe down to the wire and then nuking them out of existance (that fire powerup's finishing breath is NOT big enough damnit).

As a whole, I think it works, even with the jaw. It's a necessary sacrifice to achieve balance, I suppose.
As a whole, he definitely looks huge and menacing. I never thought Obsidius really looked very menacing. And being an animated natural disaster, and me having recently watched "Dante's Peak", I think menace is essential for this kind of guy. Instead of the borderline docile-looking bugger, he should look primal and untamed in every way. Which this version most decidedly does.

He's a hard one to redesign thats for sure. Looks like it was all worth though. Does the humor work for you? Thats the line I chose for him when I was planning the series out. I couldn't really think of anything else at the time that people could appreciate. I vaguely thought the 'falcon punch' meme might fit but he's more of a slammer than a puncher and his hits don't cause flaming anything really. Gamera on the other hand...

The humor is hit or miss, I think. I've heard it before, so it doesn't quite strike the same chord as "Mantis inquisition" - but then again, few things do. XP

What I would've done was make a Johnny Cash or "Disco Inferno" joke. No one expects those, for some reason.

Really? Guess its been done. Bummer. I never would have made the Disco Inferno connection. Sadly I did Johnny Cash already with Baragon. I shall look into the Disco Inferno angle. He's retro enough that it just might work.

The Mantis Insquisition must have been a stroke of genius, I don't think I've topped it yet.
