Description
Midtown Park had become, as one soldier could aptly put it, a circus. Not in the entertainingly theatrical sense but in the primal and catastrophically chaotic sense. Congar, a monster believed to be connected to the botched satellite test a week ago, was utterly humiliating the army. It was an intelligent but also extremely violent creature, crushing and throwing things every which way. It was particularly fond of throwing tankers into buildings and watching them rain shrapnel on innocent bystanders as the building collapsed in a plume of fiery doom. It was not as big as many had feared, only being roughly 30 meters tall; tall enough to play catch with a tank but not tall enough to literally walk through the buildings. It could however climb on them, which it did with wild abandon as it evaded and counter attacked various military forces trying to regroup and drive the creature out of the city to no avail. What drove the creature to attack in the first place was beyond what the Intel had to offer. Many thought it was some desperate gamble by the aliens to strike back at them on the cusp of victory; no one could say for sure, the monsters popping up all over the place really didn’t seem to hold anything of value except themselves. Congar was just as belligerent to monsters he’d crossed paths with briefly on the way to Midtown Park as he was to any form of human presence. The creature’s fur was shaggy, like a dogs or a mountain man’s beard, apparently some latent genes had gotten cross-wired somewhere during its mutation which might also explain its anger and intelligence over mere instinct. It was almost like it wanted revenge…Congar however wasn’t their only problem; some dimensional tear had brought forth some massive serpent creature with a titanic horn on its head and massive claws. It was more exotically colored than most monsters reported, adding to its mystery and other worldliness. It appeared square in the center of the park area, utterly confused at its surroundings. It saw that it was surrounded by buildings and immediately attempted to leave…but Congar wasn’t the live and let live type. After making a mockery out of yet another attempt to restrain him atop one of the skyscrapers, Congar had noticed the draconian serpent and roared a challenge down to him. The creature had taken a single glance at Congar and then returned to making its way out of the city. Congar however, did not like being ignored and tore out an electrical generator. With a true aim and herculean strength, the massive ape had tossed the generator like man would toss a stone, neatly beaming the serpent monster right behind the ears and sending its face into the dirt. The ape hooted and hollered, pleased at his work as the serpent slowly rose up and turned around, the creature’s mouth opened to reveal a blue fleshed bear trap of teeth. It made a roar of its own that caused several windows that weren’t broken to explode. Congar then hurled himself from the top of the building and the fight was on.
The fight between the two monsters did far more damage than just one of them ever could have. Congar was using the environment like it was an arsenal; everything he could pick up was thrown or used as a bludgeon. The draconic creature had formidable talons that could rend most of these materials to bits. They would engage in melee for a few moments, the serpent seemingly the more experienced of the two but Congar using his resourcefulness and relentless attacks to harry the creature. The two would often send each other hurtling across the city and through a building before they’d rush back at each other and start all over again. Despite his tenacity, Congar wasn’t hurting the serpent as much as he would have liked, its hard hide made it feel like he was punching diamond…if he even knew what diamonds were. Congar raced up one of the few remaining buildings with the dragon like serpent half slithering half floating up to meet him. They rocked the teetering tower for a minute or two before Congar latched on to the dragon’s left arm and tore the fin like wing apart. This stunned the dragon enough to where Congar could latch onto its head and spin him like a discus and fling him into a busted intersection. Noticing an exposed pipe nearby, the mighty ape monster picked it up and got a sardonic grin on his face before running on his unoccupied three limbs toward where the dragon had landed. Just as the creature got up to right itself, dizzy from the throw, it felt an agonizing pain in its belly as Congar swung around the side of a building and hurled the pipe like a spear, impaling the dragon sending him hurtling into another building; demolishing it. The rubble didn’t budge for a few moments but Congar wasn’t quite ready to celebrate yet. Something wasn’t quite right…the air was getting thicker and his instincts were screaming for him to run…but it was far too late.
Fafnir had been impaled twice before; once when he was a whelp and once when Manticore Inc. decided they needed a sample and followed the old legend to the tee. This was the third time he’d been impaled in his most vulnerable region and he was beyond livid. The rubble exploded as he burst from debris, steel beams and concrete scattered everywhere as his mane bristled. His eyes twin beacons of death as the ape creature, supposedly called ‘Congar’ by the human forces swarming around, was uncertain as to what he had just picked a fight with. With an ear splitting roar he charged the ape, his horn aimed at his chest. The ape just barely managed to keep it from plunging through, quickly grabbing the dragon by the head. The momentum of the charge carried them down the road and through a restaurant and then a love hotel and then bar…several blocks were flatten as Congar’s simian ass was ground into the pavement by the raging draconian. In desperation the ape unleashed a Sonic Roar, blasting the hearing sensitive creature a mile head over tail into the ground. Congar dug himself out of the rut his ass had created and shot pressured shots of air from his jaws, trying to pin the creature down and give him some room. Fafnir was back on his belly and haphazardly hovering with his one good wing to chase Congar down. The ape found himself against a wall and noticed an oil tanker. He pitched the explosive vehicle but wasn’t expecting Fafnir to catch it in his jaws and spin before hurling it back at him. The added momentum sent it barreling back at Congar the ape just barely avoided getting pegged in the head with a catatonic explosion which still sent him flying away from the area. Realizing how bad the situation had gotten, the ape attempted to flee through the park, but Fafnir was right on his heels and the enraged dragon lunged at the ape’s back and barreled into him. Fafnir wrapped himself around the ape’s midsection and began crushing mercilessly. Congar beat at the coils and then tried to reach the pipe still lodged in the dragon’s side. Fafnir saw the motion and angrily gripped the makeshift spear before yanking it out and tossing it aside, his blue blood spilling from the wound and making an arc of fluid as the pipe went twirling into the distance. Fafnir’s jaws glowed ominously as a large glowing purple ball began to form from particles in the air. Congar saw the ball of energy and panicked, desperately clawing at the large dragon and trying to reach his arms. Fafnir wouldn’t be distracted this time; his rage could not be pacified. With a single, large swipe of his claws, Fafnir sent the fingers of Congar’s right hand flying out into the park; trails of blood marking where they fell. Fafnir’s coils wrenched tighter and Congar’s chest made an audible crunch as his ribs broke. The ape’s jaws thrashed open with spittle and the last thing the massive ape mutant saw was a blistering purple laser completely enveloping his head….

So yeah, Art Trade for . Decided to do with War of the Monster fanart at the same time, did another monster battle pic and a plausible 'what if' scenario to Congar's mysteriously mecha-ifed appearance later in the game. A lot of the game posters have Congar being badass and beating things senseless. I decided to do the opposite and show him getting his ass brutally kicked. Scatha can't draw ape monsters all that well yet so this kinda ties into that too.
This work has SO MANY things going in it I don't know where to start. Texture, blood effects, lighting, painted enviroments, photo manip, cell shading, cell shading with added value adding, glowy things, fire....more blood. It just insane how much crazy I got going on in there. Hopefully it doesn't distract from the monster's too much.
So let this be a bit of a reminder, I tend to put out the same amount of effort I get with an art trade. You do something incredibly awesome and worth while concept and art wise for me, I tend to do the same for you. Frankly I don't think Fafnir has ever looked more badass, how about you?

Awesome! BTW, can you tell me about Fafnir in terms of the character's background like where he came from, or who designed the character? Who or what is Fafnir exactly?

Playing with energy effects is fun, aint it?
I've always liked Midtown, and I like how you drew it. It's only a small part, but it legitimately feels like the arena. Maybe it's the heavy use of green-yellow-black.
This actually feels like a 3-D movie, which in turn enhances the B-movie feel of it. Fafnir may be a guest in the WotM world, but he still fits in just as well as the Raptros.
Congar's finally getting what he deserves. XP Of all the monsters in that game, malevolent invaders, hungry predators, reawakened killing machines, newborn intelligences and guided weapons, Congar's the only one who's just... well, a jerk! He's like a schoolyard bully, making a beeline for you, then just wailing and never letting up for a second. First opponent. Right. I'll never get tired of playing as Robo 47, climbing to the top of a skyscraper, waiting for Congar to follow me up, then nuking him in the face the second he shows up and sending him flying clear across the arena.

Oh it is, though I might have gone overboard with this one lol.
I remember quite a bit via memory of Midtown Park though I had to look up the name again for story purposes. I also decided to give a 'what if' situation to Mecha-Congar as you see most of his upper body has been replaced but his legs are still fleshy...The player monster never gets to see something drastic happen to Congar to explain his demise other than the usual 'death rattle' all the mosnters have. Might have been fun to see a small cinematic of his demise...like catching on fire or something. There is a missing part of the story that explains the aftermath but I cut it off as it was enormous as it was already.

Gotta get the awesome out before I go on hiatus. The next pic won't be'quite' as awesome but it will have another dose of old school monster cameo which I'm sure you'll enjoy as well.
After the last pic I needed to do some more carnage again and thus 'twirling fingers' began the item of the day.

Arghlebarglebarrrr.....!
Holy. Shit. Ren.
Holy tapdancing Christ on a cracker.
This is so damn awesome I can hardly describe the amount of joy I get from looking at it. The affects from the glowing energy swirling into Fafnirs mouth alone...damn. I hope you don't mind if I change the swirling energy balls into this from now on..
The background is amazing, too-the fire and smoke, the tiny helicopters and trees-it's all awesome. I can't believe how good the blood spray looks, and both beasts look simply, primal and vicious and so, so simply amazing. The fingers flying away and towards us is an awesome touch, too-I just love this whole damn thing. Love it. The story is fun to read, as well-Congor should have left well enough alone!
Thank you so very much for doing this, Ren.

Congar is a complete douchebag...especially when you are first learning the controls and he's just hammering on you .
I was originally going for the particles to be warping into the ball, like black hole style liquification or something. It ended up being warped streams which are probably easier to do actually.
As usual I wanted to do something utterly different and insane with the monsters in question. Congar is shown getting his ass handed to him since he's usually shown being dominate in the wallpaper art. Fafnir I was originally going to have doing a aireal tail slam to show him using his tail but eventually it just became this moment of primal chaos where he is doing EVERYTHING at once. It's also part of my effort to show the kaiju actually interacting with each other rather than just gesturing as I've done in the past.
The story ties continues the 'dimensional crossover' thing we all have been dabbling in at one time or another. So Fafnir becomes 'player 1' in this situation with the first level of 'War of the Monsters'. I also wanted to pretty much show Fafnir going all out and showing everyone why he is the 'father of monsters' in his dimension. Congar would have a bit more of an advantage on him if he used his Sonic Roar more often but he just had to use that impalement haxx they all use in that game...bad idea Congar, you brought up some bad memories.
Oh, and you're quite welcome Scatha .

Scatha tends to show it as little balls spiraling around into the big ball. I decided to have it funnel in as streams due to catatonic and epic power output.
