Okay, first off, drawing Rodan was hard. I mean, Mothra was complex, Anguirus's skin was taxing, and Godzilla was my first attempt and the mystery that is his head drives me nuts; but it took me forever and a day to figure out how draw the giant flaming turkey. There are only two positions that Rodan looks good in, roosting and flight. Flight is great but its either his back or his front in view and you miss the other side. I thought of showing rising or swooping and with the former you can't see his eyes; with the latter you can't see his armored belly. Showing him just standing there with his wings open has been done to death and I wanted a portrait shot over a landscape shot since I just did a landscape shot with Anguirus. But there wasn't enough room in a portrait shot for his wings to be fully out. This situation had me reeling in fits as I stared at the paper. Then I thought about missiles, and it hit me, I'd position him like a missile ready to be fired.

His design was another thing I considered. I combined elements from just about every Rodan there has ever been. He has the three horns from the Heisei, the armor of the Shinsei, the eyes from GodzillaSamurai's Neo, and the overall build of the Atari game verison. I heard once that bright colors didn't suit him all that well, I tried to make him a compromise by making a dark brick red instead of scarlet or brown. His highlights made him red anyway . His wings I customized a bit. I figured since he's widely considered male I'd give him male bird features with a strong orange/bronze colored wings and a flame pattern along the ends. Birds open their wings wide to make themselves look bigger and more intimidating and to attract mates so I figured I'd give Rodan the ability to do that. He's also got the Uranium heat beam so it doesn't really matter if his prey sees him coming a mile away, the heat beam can kill them a mile away .

Finally, his bit humor is a modified line from the song 'Danger Zone' which is the most iconic song in the movie Top Gun. The connection isn't too hard to make. Top Gun, flying, Rodan, Mach 15 sonic booms... You get the picture. The next one up is Titanosaurus, till next time.
