Description Now that I've gotten my part of the story concerning the Congo cryptids done, here's the colored version of the Kasai Rex I submitted earlier.

Is the general consensus that the Kasai Rex is a large monitor lizard with a bipedal stance and dinosaurian features??

The 'general consensus' is that the Kasai Rex is a living, literal, theropod dinosaur somewhere in Africa. Typically a red or orange color that hunts rhinos. For the project and my own interpretation that hasn't been done to death a hundred times already I took both a 'nature fills in the gaps' speculative evolution angle and a 'let's pretend that weird black and white photo was actually real' angle. The photo isn't real but in the context of HWE monsters, cryptids and most importantly Kaiju are very real and have been longer than written history. So my version is basically taking the usual features associated with Kasai Rex and blending it with the 'photo'.

Question: Did you base the color scheme on the Giganotosaurus from Dino Crisis 2?

A lot of other depictions of Kasai tend to be red, reddish or orangish tan. I was more or less following in that mold and Red also helped signify that the Kasai was the Apex predator in a sea of off greens, grays and blues.

The Giga in Dino Crisis 2 was really rad though.

Ah, gotcha.

Reason I was asking was that in the story this big boi acts very much like the Giga - a massive unstoppable killing machine that bulldozes its way through damn near everything.

Try drawing a Mokele Mbembe. And it is a wonderful interpretation of an African cryptid.

A friend of mine in the same group already did one .

Actually, the Kasai Rex was a tyrannosaur. Funny enough, there were no tyrannosaurids living in Africa.

We don't know what it 'actually' was. Do you just not understand what the definition of a cryptid is?

That's something that I discussed with other core group members when coming up with this design. It was 'rumored' to be a theropod of some sort and the fake photograph of it was a monitor lizard. So rather than going with the usual T-rex interpretation I chose a monitor lizard of massive size that fulfills the same ecological niche of a theropod dinosaur. Deliberately in the style of old movie retrosaurs like Gwangi and the rex from 'The Last Dinosaur'.
