Description
This guy was fun; another one of my favourite ghost types. I based it off of bats, gremlins and goblins.Related content

You can really see the bat features in the face, and the body of a gremlin, the claws of a goblin... or.. at least, that's what it looks like to me. Great work!

No problem! This piece looks really amazing though, and you can see the effort it took to make this! It looks great!

I love Sableye! Even if it looked like this I would still want one.

Well that's a matter of opinion! I think RJ basing Sableye on a Loris was a super clever idea, but I went for a bit more of a fantasy creature approach to really accentuate the cave-dweller it is. The good thing about realistic PokΓ©mon is that there isn't a right or a wrong

I really don't think it's an opinion of mine. Just compare these two images
pre06.deviantart.net/742a/th/pβ¦
vs
orig00.deviantart.net/5929/f/2β¦
and tell me which Typhlosion looks the most realistic and looks the most like a Typhlosion at the same time.

Eh. That still depends, it's certainly subjective. For example, I've heard people say that realistic PokΓ©mon would look like their in game models, which I don't agree with. I actually based my Typhlosion on something similar to RJ's (although I went for honey badger as opposed to sun bear), complete with the porcupine quills. I tend to base my PokΓ©mon on a mix of real life animals that still matches the PokΓ©mon's original silhouette. I'd say I fit somewhere between Soup and Butter and Arvalis.

Kind of. It was based on bats and gremlins so it might have some similarities.Β

it looks like the kind of thing you'd see in caves. like as SOON as you step into the cave, they all swarm around you and start biting your ankles.

It looks more like Golbat than Sableye. Plus, I think a realistic Sableye should've had fur and been translucent, being it's a Ghost type and normal type moves wouldn't connect it. He looks too solid, thus unlike a Ghost type.

ReneCampbellArt In reply to MichaelKlump [2014-07-25 04:11:43 +0000 UTC]
Sableye is based on Gremlins, and I also referenced Bats and 'goblins' from the Spideriwick chronicles; just because it's ghost-type, doesn't mean it should be transparent. Sableye is a physical creature that hides in caves; its nature of living in the dark and dwelling in sediment means it would actually lack fur (or at least have fine fur) like a lot of ground and cave-dwelling mammals. All part of the design process and research. The long hairs on Sableye are however to accentuate touch sensitivity in an otherwise dark world.Β
I think I have to add in my descriptions about each PokΓ©mon from my Reddit submissions so you can understand my design process and referencing appropriately, since you've questioned about 80% of them.

He made comments on ~90% of my PokΓ©mon works and continued to suggest 'why I should/shouldn't have designed it a certain way.' I found it annoying because I put through a rather rigorous amount of study in the design process of these and replied to most comments he left.
That was three weeks ago. He hasn't been very active since haha *shrug*

All realistic pokemon look absolutely amazing! Also, for this piece, did you take any inspiration from the goblins from the Spiderwick Chronicles?

Thankyou again! I did actually; I have a Spiderwick Field guide and took inspiration from the art in that, along with bats and the mythological Hopskinville Goblins from which they're based C:

You're welcome. The goblins were very interesting little critters, weren't they? I love fantasy writing and have a bit of an obsession with biology, so the idea of a whole other realm of creatures is my dream come true, even if most of them would be trying to kill me.
