Description
I was checking my millions of unlabeled cds, searching for some notes I needed, when I found one cd with old drawings I did in 2003 and 2004.I redrew one, to see what happens.
Man, it's been a long way D:
This looks more like 2003, but the file said 2004 and I uploaded it on animexx in 2004, too : /
That's Xellas from Slayers, btw. I know there are various other versions of her, but I always liked the bling bling one the best.

That's pretty cool! I like the different styles, and how you've improved the general shading and form. I do agree with ~RockBarnes, though, the different styles are both really good in their own right.

I must say, these are completely different styles and as such I don't find the 2004 version any worse than the 2008 version.

Gives me hope...though I'm not sure I'm even at the skill level shown by the first image, yet. 
It's cool to see the "before" and "after" images side-by-side like this. Maybe I should look back at some of my old art that's lyin' around somewhere in my room and try some redoes.

Baroque isn't the same as Expressionism.
Though I agree it has been improved dimensionally regarding position, angle, and space, a specific drawing style does not change.

Transitioning from one style to another is still improvement. Not to mention the better grasp of anatomy, color, composition, and lighting. You have no clue what you're talking about.

Excuse me, but I am an art student. I can understand the anatomy, color, comp, etc., however I'm STATING that the CHANGE IN STYLE is more of a preference decision. You cannot define preference as improvement.

Let me say this first and foremost. You don't need to be an art student to understand art. Or to see improvement.
Secondly, this argument shouldn't be about preference. I'd understand your argument if he was very good at the 2004 style, and then shifted to the 2008 style and was still equally as good as it, didnt change his grasp on anatomy, didnt change his coloring style. THEN that would be a preference of one style over another. But a dramatic change like this, going from pillow shading, having a not so wonderful grasp on anatomy, nor lighting, or the anime style in general, and slowly morphing it to something they enjoy, thats better then anything they could have made in 2004 is improvement.

...That's still improvement. If you go from a crappier anime style to a better realistic style, it still counts as improvement since styles tend to change over the years.
Of course, you could go from a crappy anime style to a better looking anime style, too, but it makes no difference. Improvement is improvement.

I suppose you hear this all the time, but the improvement is amazing. I like how much more threatening the more recent version of Zelas appears, just moving the hand with the cigarette makes her look more challenging and having the palm rather than the fist on her hip seems bolder in a way?
