Description Drawings and a clay sketch I did of sloats. These are creatures from my comic "the Veligent "
I got the face for the male from a photo of the Carina nebula: www.spacetelescope.org/images/…
Nature is copyright free!
( the skull drawing isn't accurate. They actually have protruding eye sockets with thick postorbital bars. I just now decided this)

Fantastic creature design! They remind me of the baku from Eastern mythology, but drawn as a scientifically plausible version Γ  la Cryptozoologicon!^^

Thank you!!
Β I didn't know what a baku was until someone pointed out that these sloats resembled that mythical creature.I just thought bakus were badly drawn elephants!

I like these. You gave them a very realistic design. And nice going getting that sketch from the Carina Nebula! Cleaver.
About how big are they, and what would their coloration be? Browns?

I figure the males are about the size of a full grown hog, but a little taller.
Β I think they are shaded from a pale cream underside to a dark brown along the spine,Β  with a lighter stripe along the midline of the back.
Β Thank you!

You're quite welcome!
That size looks right. The coloration is similar to what I imagined.
May I ask, are they meant to be earth creatures?
I like their tails too. These are just cool critters!

They are not earth creatures, they are from of the world of my comic, "the Veligent".
Β Thank you so much!

hmm, now with tapirs and elephants, they have short tails- I wonder what the sloat uses it's long tail for?

Denahi [2013-05-22 10:20:18 +0000 UTC]

What do they do, exactly? In the comic they are a 'danger', is it because they are strong or simply because they gather in a group and run people over?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Reptangle In reply to Denahi [2013-05-22 16:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Sloats are pretty big, and smash anything in their path. Not because they are vicious, just because they don't think, and in a group they are very powerful.
I had a flock of sheep. Each one only weighed about 60 -80 pounds, but if they bunched up and ran right at you, (just because that was the way they happened to be going- sheep aren't vicious either) they could be pretty dangerous! Rams do not go around things.

Oh, I had never known that those little elephant creatures were called bakus! I have seen them before, but I thought they were just badly drawn elephants!
Yeah, they do kinda resemble sloats, but with tusks.

Besides the intelligence, which is seems somewhat more of a fantasy element to me, I would be not at all surprised if these creatures roamed an Earth where Cenozoic evolution took a different turn.

Reptangle In reply to Orionide5 [2013-05-10 15:33:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it sure seems like almost every design was tried at least once, and many, like the basic rodent tooth design, seems to of been repeated many times. I was noticing that my hyrax skull has long, curved, constantly growing incisors very similar to rodents', but hyraxes and rodents are unrelated.

I love this creature! Great concept! I've done something similar with a character of mine, got his design off a stain on my desk!

It looks like there's a goodly bit of tapir in there; what is the nature of the sloat, besides being antagonistic toward poad-drunk kingly fellows?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Reptangle In reply to rachaelm5 [2013-05-08 23:30:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, there's some tapir, but mostly Saiga antelopes: [link]
I find that shape of head to be so beautiful.
They like to swim and wallow in the slogs. They don't move around much, but when they do, they move in a group. They open up spaces for the existing pathways to grow wider, and by plowing through the dense vegetation, make new openings for pathway sprouts to branch off. Sloats are most active this time of year.

Well, I may never do a final sculpture.
This was just for my own reference, to draw from. I often do clay models of characters.
Though if enough people seem like the would want a sloat, I might finish it.Casting that tail would be a problem though!

CyberNeticShark In reply to Reptangle [2013-05-08 18:19:13 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine. Lots of fur detail just hanging out. It would be an interesting sculpture to paint. :3
Personally I would love to see a fox or red panda XD Just for fun.
