Story:
Emily was in the barn kitchenette, washing a pile of freshly picked carrots. Madi casually leaned over, grabbing 3 of them off the top of the clean pile and said, “thanks” with a devilish smile. Em just shook her head and replied, “you should be thanking Brittany… they’re from her garden.”
Before Em could say anything else, especially about Madi helping her finish rinsing all the carrots, Madi began humming to herself (to imply she would not be able to hear any further conversation) and walked outside. Em smiled to herself, knowing exactly who her friend was confiscating those clean carrots for, and went back to rinsing the rest of the batch.
Holding the fresh, leafy-green tops of the ripe garden veggies, still dripping water from their pointed tips, Madi headed out towards the pastures. She had turned out Tempy, Mystique and Whimsy earlier that afternoon and wanted to check on how her girls were doing. She was working with all three mares, at various levels, to get them ready for next year’s show season. Tempy was a seasoned pro, having won the title of FOYS in a team competition a few years ago*. As the oldest, not-to-mention also the largest, of the mares, she went from broodmare back to working mare with remarkable ease. Mystique was a bit younger, and had just a small amount of show experience with Madi in the past as well. They had competed as FOYS Finale Contenders in last year’s event*. Whimsy was the youngest of the mares, and Tempy’s first foal. She had grown gracefully in the first 3 years of her life, and was training lightly with Madi now in preparation of her own show career.
Madi found the girls grazing contently under the evergreen trees, enjoying the shade and mouthfuls of fresh summer grasses. She called out to the mares, but kept walking past them towards the far gate. Whimsy was the first to respond, knowing exactly where Madi was headed and began to trot towards her favorite human enthusiastically. Mystique decided to follow Whimsy, ambling at a nice relaxed stroll towards the gate. Tempy kept her head down, swishing her gorgeous pale tail, as she grabbed a few more determined mouthfuls of the grass, before she conceded to follow along behind everyone else.
Madi pushed the gate open to the southern pasture, securing it in place so the mares could come and go as they desired, and led the way towards one of her favorite spots beneath a large towering tree. The mares followed eagerly, able to smell the fresh carrots swaying in the wind as they trailed their brunette human closely. Whimsy and Mystique drew up short, with Tempy closing in quickly from behind. “I’d say you ladies love me so much,” Madi said to the mares, “but I know you’re only here for the food.” She reached up to untangle the chocolate palomino’s forelock, and then proceeded to give her lead mare the crispy carrot. Then she quickly passed the other two carrots to Mystique and Whimsy, who took them greedily from her hands.
Madi wiped the remanent of the horse drool from her hands, then reached up to pull her swimsuit cover off. Her ruby-red swimwear matched her earrings perfectly. She kicked off her coordinating flip-flops, placing them – and the folded-up article of clothing – at the base of the tree, and then turned to towards the mares. This group enjoyed splashing in the cool pond water that was fed with a natural underground spring, ensuring a continuous source of new water. The giant mares had spent the last few afternoons following Madi in to the pond, where everyone was able to cool off, and then the mares could continue grazing while Madi worked on getting some swimming laps done.
“Let’s go,” Madi said, as she turned from their large expressive eyes and alert ears and ran towards the water’s edge…

*My story is a bit slower than RL… hence the timelines being shorter for story purposes than the actual year I entered the FOYS events with Tempy and Mystique.

Question - how do you all paint grass? Brushes? Strokes by hand?
I'm trying to work on my backgrounds... putting in show-entry effort, even when it's not for a show, just so I can try to improve (on a personal level). But the individual blades of grass has me bewildered. It took forever to paint each one of those by hand. And yet, then some of the grass brushes I've seen are just so patterned/repetitive. I'm curious what are your techniques to help try to paint grass?
