Description
Thanatos in Carousel Stables Birthday Show: Summer Class Edit He got third.Previously:
Thanatos had made the swim from Crete, across the Aegean Sea, quickly. The summer waters were warm and comfortable, and his control over the wind allowed him to summon powerful air currents that guided him towards the mainland of Greece quickly. Emerging from the brilliant blue-green water, Thanatos shook his glistening coat, as droplets of saltwater sprayed the air like sparkling crystals. He knew he could use the breeze to dry himself off, but the temperatures were already quite warm, and he still had far to travel before he reached the City of Dion to the north.
Thanatos set out, determined to reach the city where classical heritage and ancient monuments would remind him of his true home, as quickly as possible. His training on Olympus had prepared him for long and dangerous journeys, building muscle and endurance that made him an exquisite athlete - and the beautiful landscape of Athen's subtropical Mediterranean beaches made it effortless for Thanatos to gallop across while maintaining a brisk pace.
He travelled the countryside with ease, moving northeastern towards Delphi. As Thanatos drew closer to the city, he began to feel the faintest pull of magic. He was barely aware of the presence, and yet he could still sense it. Yes, he thought to himself, there is a presence here that shines faintly with the power of the Gods. He let instinct take over, reaching deep within himself to connect to the power, as he veered towards the east to discover what could possibly be radiating this magical aura.
And then he found it, there upon the slopes of Mount Parnassus, in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, he felt a surge of power. Moving quietly through the periphery of the Temple grounds, making sure to avoid contact with humans, Thanatos headed towards a small nature alcove that appeared hidden beyond the western columns. He stepped through the low hanging vines, filled with fragrant pink and purple flowers, into a small garden brimming with colors and life. Birds of every shape and color filled the air with their songs, as bees buzzed collecting nectar from brilliant flowers, and brightly colored koi swam energetically though crystal clear stream waters that flowed from cascading waterfalls located in the back of the sanctuary.
Thanatos stopped breathing for a moment, looking at the majestic view in front of him. It was like a piece of a perfect summer memory had been plucked out of Olympus, and laid here before him. There was no question that magic was at work here.
And then, he saw her. All at once Thanatos knew who she was, the beautiful young but ageless priestess, Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi. She was the voice of the gods for mortals, blessed with visions and prophecies directly from Olympus. Her wisdom and knowledge went beyond the earthly plane. Thanatos felt his heart quicken, filling with hope. If there was anyone who would be able to help him, to offer him guidance, and set him upon the Enlightened Path, surely it would be her.
"Come forth magnificent one," said the melodic voice, as wisps of magic swirled around her in the misting air, "I have been expecting you. I know why you are here, and that for which you have been searching."
Thanatos could barely contain himself. He moved forward, his feet dancing across the lush green grass, and approached the Oracle without hesitation. He had found a key - she was a small piece of his old life that was still connected to Olympus. As he drew near, he felt the power of the magic surround him, and he reared up before Pythia, demonstrating his majesty and grace (which he usually tried to hide from mortals) as he was overcome with excitement.
So I started working on this before I had leveled him up (to Laurels), and decided to finish it as is, and will use this as a "bridge" story to help explain his horn (which I'm still designing).
I really struggle with backgrounds, but wanted to put forth some effort and practice into this. It's fairly obvious that I did not have a reference for the scenery… the grass, rocks, water/mist - okay, everything - could really use some perspective and improvement. But I had fun trying to take a scene in my head, and bring it to life (even if it's nowhere as magnificent or magical as I imagined). And it's all about trying/practicing, yeah?

Whoa! Just stunning.
The background with all that water and the rock face is wonderful. I'm not usually a fan of saturated colours in a background, but they do have their uses and the strong colours here make it look rich and lush rather than cartoonised. I just love Delphi's costume - nuff said XD. I want a cloak/dress like that. Thanatos just looks amazing. The pose and anatomy are great (all those feathers!) but his mane and tail just take the cake. So much thick hair and the incredible waves in it i just have no words. I'll be over here...staring

Thank you! This one was really fun for me. And I figured that by entering the Summer Class comp, I could go ahead with bright lush colors (not usually my thing either). So I'm happy it worked for you.
I can't take too much credit on the dress, a lot of it was based off the listed reference. I just had a great ref to use. For the girl, and the horse too. And the mane, well I was in the mood to try something new... and thought of the misting waterfall (and possible moisture in the air), and maybe that could explain his hair getting wavy, and thought I'd just give it a go. I'm delighted that you think it turned out well.
Hahaha, don't stare too hard... would hate for you to go cross-eyed. Then who would look after dear little Bug.

You're welcome And I can tell you had fun; somehow art we enjoy doing has more life (or something) to it than art that we aren't so invested in.
Haha, no crossed eyes here But it does look great. And in all fairness, finding a decent reference picture can be an art form all of its own, but the artist has to have the eye and talent to transfer that, too, so well done all the same ^^

This is gorgeous!
I love the whole setting: the interaction of the priestess and Thanatos look great; like they are dancing together - the poses go so well together.
They're both beautifully colored and shaded: priestess' clothes look awesome (cool design!) and Thanatos' mane and tail are just wow.
And that background: so magical!
It looks so fresh and vivid! I also love the way you painted those waterfalls and rocks and everything!
I can almost smell those flowers and hear water running between rocks.
Story is fascinating, it was great to learn a little more about Thanatos and his journey!

Girl, you are too kind to me!
Thank you. I had alot of fun working on this one (which is good, since it took me forever - LOL, what was it we were saying about moving slowly?). I know there is so much I need to improve on, especially in the background, but I'm really glad I took the time to try and get it done. Humans are challenging for me, but I was feeling inspired and decided that it was a good time to draw, since I wanted the Oracle in his story anyways. Besides, with a great reference and a ton of fabric (hiding actual anatomy), I just had to try. And so grateful I found a comp to enter him in, that allowed me freedom to draw what I wanted and continue to explore his storyline. I'm glad you enjoyed reading a little more about his journey.
And now that he's Laurel'd up, I need to get drawing/designing his horns.

Nah, I am just honest!
Good luck in the contest! Although I am sure you don't need any luck; you will collect all the trophies and prizes and leave nothing to others.
And yay for laurels, can't wait to see Thanatos' horns!
Do you have an idea already how they will look like?

Haha, somehow I don't think I'm going to collect all the trophies, there are some very beautiful entries in that class. But I'm glad you have faith in me.
I do have an idea for Thanatos horns (spoiler hint = I'm going for simple). Just have to get a moment to ink and color them now.

Of course!
Simple design sounds great - Thanatos is such handsome fellow that he doesn't need very complicated horns.
I have already started thinking about Thyella's wings even tho it will take a long time before she earns them... but should decide her path at first!

Hahaha, don't feel bad. I've been thinking about Thanatos wings for ages too... and he's no where close to getting them. I think that's half the fun - designing their "accessories."
At least I can start drawing his horns. I've got the sketch and lineart done... just gotta find a moment to sit down and color it now.

Indeed! That's the charm of this breed, to be able to "customise" your own character.

Thank you! I had a lot of fun creating this one. And I'm so glad you enjoyed me adding the Oracle of Delphi too - I'm trying to keep his storyline entangled with bits of Greek mythology - just seems appropriate if his goal is to return to Olympus.
Thank you for the too.

I'm so far behind in my Cavitto mare's story, it makes me sad. It's mostly because I work so slowly! I haven't decided where her Path will lead. I hate working slowly D: I spend like 2 hours just on lines, while other can produce a full body coloured and shaded image with a background in like 3 hours.

ReQuay In reply to Abyssi-Somnis [2013-05-29 23:57:45 +0000 UTC]
Oh, don't feel too badly. I've had my Cavitto for almost 4 months now, and have just completed the 4th part of his story on Earth (averaging 1/month). And some of those are short stories (aka 1-2 paragraphs). That's what I love about this horse/breed... there is no pressure, just as long as we stay semi-active.
And I haven't decided exactly where Thanatos' story is going entirely yet either... it's almost writing itself as I stumble upon each new event. So don't worry if you don't have a plot worked out just yet. Some of the best ones just seem to discover themselves.
I know what you mean about slow though. This one took me about 3.5 days... something that I know other artists could have busted out in a few hours. I try not to get discouraged, but just enjoy the myself while I am drawing (it's like going to my "happy" place) and let the process work itself out - irregardless of the amount of time it takes.
I can't wait to see where you will take Desdemona's story (when you have the time).
