No criteria is required for a DD. A "DD" is just a feature. That's all it is. Everything you comment on this will be seen by the artist and wont make them feel better about it. Generally people don't choose their art to be featured, someone else picks it without their knowledge.

May I ask how you got into adoptables? I'm sure it wasn't overnight, but it's just a curiosity I have towards those who seem to make a big name for themselves selling designs. Was it just a matter of putting them out again and again until people started buying?
I ask cause I tried a few times. The first time, they all sold (and it took a year for that...) and I got no feedback if my designs just sucked or if it was a matter of art. A few months ago I joined an adoptable artist's stream and she said I should try again since my artwork was a lot better. And I did...and it didn't go so well. I'm pretty sure it was the design, and I was just reading what was "popular" in the community wrong.
If it's just a matter of dishing more out until someone notices I exist, I may keep trying.
But if it's my art style and characters designs, I don't see the point in placing in the effort. If I have an unlikable style, then that's that.Ā

Hi there! I personally think I got into adoptables when it was a bit easier to get seen, since I noticed kind of a big adopt boom like half a year after. However I do think a big part of it is just dishing them out, especially now, because it's pretty hard to be seen in the waves of submitted designs now so the more opportunity you have for that, the better (submitting to a ton of adopt groups!). Of course a big part is also the actual design and the art itself in some cases, but definitely don't think it's not worth placing the effort! I'm sure it's not that you have an unlikable style, just that you may need to market yourself a little better!
Try different kinds of designs to see what works best for you, but I usually find if people still do what they like as well it does a little better because often it kind of looks better??? Kind of hard to explain arara... Also submit to a lot of groups, get active in the adopt community, and I've seen that holding giveaways/raffles works well with the price of entry being to advertise the giveaway!
aaa, either way, good luck!!

Besides submitting to a lot of groups, what is "getting active" in the adopt community?
Been planning to do a raffle/giveaway. Just wanted to confirm I wanted to keep trying at this. :3
Thanks for really good, and friendly feedback! I think I just really needed to hear it from someone who is more than knee deep in selling adopts.

Taking part in polls and the like from adopt groups, maybe leaving comments and such on other adopt deviations! Admittedly I'm not very good at it myself but;;; I see a lot of people recommend it! The giveaways I think contribute to that too~
Aw, it's no problem! Good luck again!

I've not seen a poll in an adopt group. o3o I need to watch the right ones! ha ha
I have a feeling that I should make another account with "adopts" in the name. So when I comment, people can get the hint I'm more than just an admirer. xP
Thank you thank you, and keep up your wonderful work!

I will never understand the point of adoptables ...... Like you own the right to kind of use it. I guess it is intended for Roleplay or something. Very nice illustrations though.

Some people use them for their own personal stories, and some adopt artists allow people to use the designs for commercial work as well!
Thank you!

$85-$100? I thought character refs were usually like $30 or something.

resadoptables In reply to AnimeCrunchy [2013-05-07 20:57:00 +0000 UTC]
I guess because it's not just a ref sheet, but rights to a character! Though a ref sheet for $30 seems really cheap as well;;;;

Technically, you can only license out something protected by copyright and the "buyer" doesn't actually own the character.
Sorry but I'm not really understanding how buying an OC for that much money can be justified. I mean, congratulations on making a great profit out of the picture and all but I'm really confused here.

resadoptables In reply to AnimeCrunchy [2013-05-08 05:23:27 +0000 UTC]
That's "technically," but with adoptables people are making designs and selling the rights to them. From there, they can license or copyright the character if they wish to. And unless you're dealing with some shady people, morally the character belongs to them and you're not going to see the seller using them themselves for profit or trying to sell them again, etc.
And that's alright, it's not something that really needs to be understood if it's not where your interests lie. But selling character designs isn't a new things; companies buy character designs all the time. Either way, I hope this helps to get a bit more understanding on the adoptable thing!

AnimeCrunchy In reply to resadoptables [2013-05-08 09:33:29 +0000 UTC]
It's still not protected by law though. If you sold an "adoptable", you could choose to sue buyers for copyright infringement.
I still don't understand the "adoptables" fad at all, but it's more successful than just advertising commissions and your designs are very pretty so I think I'll get into it.

Emberguard In reply to AnimeCrunchy [2013-05-09 07:01:59 +0000 UTC]
Actually, I'm not entirely sure about that. It's really no different from Nintendo buying the rights for Pokemon and Mario when they originally bought them off of their owners. The buyer is buying the copyright to those characters, not the artwork, so there is no copyright infringement for the buyer to use those characters in commercial or non-commercial works UNLESS there was a contract signed to say they can only use it for non-commercial uses. Then again as there is no contract as such to begin with that I know about.... who knows who has what legal grounds.

AnimeCrunchy In reply to Emberguard [2013-05-09 10:14:24 +0000 UTC]
The thing is though, there's no contract. Sure, there'll be comments detailing the exchange on DA but that's the only evidence a judge would have if poo hit the fan... Hypothetical situation, of course.
Nintendo has written contracts and have left a paper trail.
Most people on DA don't.
It's a blessing and a curse that not everyone on DA knows about copyright, but it's interesting either way.

I could, but once again I'm talking about morals. I mean, if an artist started selling adopts then started suing people or continued to use the design for their own personal projects, it'd eventually come out and the artist would lose any rep/business they got. But yeah I mean there are a lot of things people could do, but you just gotta hope the people you deal with are good people I guess, lksmkdlg.
And ah yeah I've seen a lot more adoptables than commissions lately, but it could just be because I'm paying more attention to the adopt community than I did before when I didn't know anything about them lskmdgklsg. But ah, thanks so much! If you get into it I wish you luck!
