Description Come carve along with me! ( the tutorial itself is on my journal - it's too large to upload as one giant string of pictures )

*

Caring for your stamps:
After each use remember to clean your stamp as soon as you can.

Run them under the tap (faucet) under warm water, then blot them on a serviette (napkin – now you can learn Aussie terms too!). If ink prints off, wash them again and stamp on the serviette some more, repeat until no more ink comes off.

NEVER RUB ACROSS THE SURFACE OF YOUR STAMP! This can break off details.

If you use a strong colour like black or red, sometimes the ink will stain your stamp. Don’t worry – if you clean it properly it won’t transfer the next time you use it, just the rubber will be stained. It’s the sign of a well-used stamp!

Leave on a clean dry serviette to dry, then store your stamps in an air-tight container with the carving facing up.
If you follow these steps your stamps should last a long time!

I hope you enjoyed learning about how I carve my stamps! I’d love to see pictures of any stamps you make, or answer any questions you have about my tute or stamp-carving in general, so please don't be shy!

Very cool! Do you think it'd work with like Sculpey clay?

I'm not sure. But I know you can make stamps with a lot of things! Kitchen sponge, foam, even potatoes! So who knows!

Yes! Found my cutting tools!! And an old eraser (had to look hard for that one!)

I still need to practice, but the first tries were quite a success!

Now all I need to do is try to transfer my logo to a 0,5 cm piece of eraser O.o (is that even possible?)

It quite worked on the lino stuff... maybe if I find some hard eraser.

Can't put labels on my hats 2x2cm

And all of a sudden I remember why my art teacher used to say: Never cut in the direction of your fingers!

I just stated carving stamps for letterboxing. and for carving I just use a sharp exacto knife and for a gouge I took a pencil I found removed the eraser and crimped the metal into a v. This works great. The michael's and joann's in So-Cal dont carry any stamp carving supplies.

I wish i could take total credit for the pencil idea but I got parat of it from the letterboxing north america site. But on first try I found that the cut was wide and shallow so I got the idea to crimp it into a v shape making for a nice gouge like cut. Making your own stamp for letterboxing is part of what makes letterboxing fu its sorta like a treasure hunt. If youre interested here is a link to the most commonly used international site. [link]

I really like this tutorial and I've always wanted to try this craft out. How much did the carving tools cost?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

restlesswillow In reply to lalami [2008-07-16 06:39:09 +0000 UTC]

The two chisel tools I've shown here are Marples & Son brand (they were my grandfather's), so they run about $100 a piece. I'm lucky I inherited them!

You can buy the same tools for a MUCH cheaper price at many online stores - my favourite stamp store is www.stampeaz.com . You can buy a Speedball cutter (it's a handle with interchangeable heads) for $4, and each head is $2 here [link]
If you're in US, just check out your local Michael's or Jo-ann's and they should have 'em right there
