It was a clear vision in my mind: mountains and a river with big Β fishes and Β huge strange figures behind the line of mountains. This kind of vision does not happen as often as I would like, but I always take these images seriously, it seem to come from beyond.

Speaking of "beyond", I found this very interesting short text, which may shed an interesting light on the birth of what we call "mainstream" religion:

If I'm interpreting it well: at first there were shamans, who held a special position in the tribe based on their ability to contact the "beyond". The majority of these were women. Then a bunch of guys declared themselves "white shamans", automatically turning the others in "black", i.e. less esteemed ones. Rather than on their personality and skills, their status relied upon knowledge of complex rituals, legends and traditions (which perhaps they invented themselves for a large part). This access to "secret knowledge" allowed them to exclude any non-initiates, the women to begin with. It reminds me of what some claim about Stonehenge, that it marked a transition from female-dominated moon worship to male-dominated sun worship, only with regard to the shamans, it seems to represent a much earlier and basic ("primordial") transition.

In the north of Russia, even in the modern era, you can often meet women who practice shamanism and have a special status among people. A woman has a more powerful connection with the other worlds, because she is the ancestor, the source... In many cultures, a woman dominates in magical practices over men, but not many of them follow this path, due to strict rules and restrictions. It is a really difficult path for any person who chose this because he/she must renounce much that is inherent for people.
