Very meaningful. Actually I don't know any myth about a bird that eat the sun, but your work makes me think about  the Egyptian myth of Ra and the snake Apophis.
And I love to think about Egyptian mythology...

Some of my paintings has  influence of Egyptian culture, despite the shamanic images and mythology. It's all very closely related in my Universe. Thank you for your opinion

Do you know these? marysblack.com/tag/white-shama… Are you interested in the more theoretical backgrounds of ancient mythology? I'm currently reading this royallib.com/read/armstrong_ka… , very interesting!

Of course I'm interested in ancient mythology. Almost all of my images include a different fragments of ancient myths and legends, they are just very intertwined and not always clear for interpretation. I checked the site of the ancient murals, it really useful information. Thanks!!  Unfortunately, the second link is banned in Russia,  I can not open this site.

That's strange, it seems like a fairly innocent web site, lots of Russian novels. Actually I found this version first: lektsii.com/1-69645.html . This one doesn't credit the author which seems unfair, that's why I posted the other link.

In short, and with some interpretation of my own added, the story goes as follows. First there was the Great Spirit who ruled the Universe. I suppose you must have wondered why this Great Spirit religion of a.o. the Native Americans isn't considered a form of monotheism. It's a question I have often asked myself as a kid. Well, the problem is that this Great Spirit rules over an animated Universe in which everything has a soul, so there are many sub-spirits and sub-sub-spirits etc., like for example the spirit of mountain X or river Y. So there's a Great Spirit and many little spirits. A Universe like this makes quite a lot of sense to me. Even if I could never fully understand it, at least it seems coherent.

The surprising part to me is when the little spirits, in an act of patricide, decide to do away with the Great Spirit altogether and become gods themselves. That's when polytheism is born. Polytheism has never made any sense to me. It seems in most cases very much a glorification of the "own" society, with the own gods as a kind of national proto-heroes. The emergence of polytheism seems to quite conveniently coincide with the birth of nationalistic sentiments. Of course it is inextricably linked with the emergence of cities and the city state, so that makes sense. Polytheism seems to occur in a strictly demarcated piece of territory, as opposed to an endless and open plain or an impenetrable forest which basically belongs to no one, and therefore to everyone.

Step three is when monotheism emerges and the Desert God takes over, who starts to be called the Father of Creator. This Father-god is "a jealous god", and as a consequence he does away with all the little gods and becomes the sole ruler of a now inanimate Universe. This inanimate nature of the Universe forms the very basis of all science btw. It doesn't make sense to perform science in an animated universe, because there are no fixed natural laws. Science doesn't go too well with magic

Of course the animated, magical universe is where your artwork, and perhaps all Art, lives in. I did find it a very interesting article because I had never looked upon the development of religion and mythology this way.

Currently, many online libraries banned here, they are trying to fight against the pirates, but it is almost impossible in this country.

I understand what you mean about the Great Spirit. Native Americans believe that the Great Spirit is the creator of all things. In reality, many people have had similar beliefs in different parts of the world, for example the indigenous peoples of the Russian North also believe in the hierarchy  of the spirits.

I just call it The Creator (or creators, it is not so important). It' similar to the great architect of the Universe, who created all the worlds, planets, stars, some ancient gods and spirits. Probably the Creator is quite a material being,  it's just a very difficult task for our mind to realize the real form of it. It's like a question: where is the edge of the Universe Not everyone can imagine it. Usually, people need in concrete images  and ancient historical evidence, of course the world's official religions have many advantages in this.. Well, I fall silent, because I gave myself a promise not to discuss religions

Ah, yes, like I said, that web site contains loads of Russian novels, perhaps half of them are still under active copyright. I wonder, is Google Books blocked in Russia? Google is widely known as the world's leading copyright violator.

Religion is indeed a hairy subject, especially once the Truth gets involved. But that article is about the history of mythology and thus unavoidably of religion as well. Of course even, or especially, any neutral and objective review of the history of religion is bound to hurt the religious feelings of "hardcore" believers, as it may undermine their views of absolute Truth.

But that wasn't what the article made me think of. What fascinates me is the idea of a (lost) animated Universe, and Art as a kind of re-animator. I often have to think about what you once wrote about cave art and how difficult it is to reproduce it. What offends me personally, I mean deeply hurts some kind of religious-like feeling (a sense of justice at least) inside me, is when people compare for example those cave paintings from Lascaux with, say, a Klimt painting, and somehow manage to label them as "primitive". That's what could be called The Arrogance Of Civilization (meaning: Urbanization) speaking. I see no difference in skill level between those ancient artists and any modern artist. True, the animals in Lascaux aren't "realistic", but who says they were meant to be? I often wonder how those people practiced and how young artists were trained. Those Lascaux paintings look to me like they were the result of hundreds, perhaps thousands of studies (and hours of study) before the final perfect expressive form was found. But then some modern day dick looks at them and says "My child could do that" - the Horror!

I think you know what I mean
