stepford net was the new way to get connected. A free internet provider that worked at home and on mobile. Why pay bills when all you got was a few minutes of adverts per hour. You were going to get the adverts anyway. The only difference was they tracked you watching and listening to the quick adverts. Ad blips they called them. Over and done in under 5 seconds. They needed access to your speaker to play their happy silly jingles and used your camera to track you watching their adverts. A bit more intrusive then a lot of companies but not much more and they were very upfront with what they were doing. And only sending safe video so no malware to infect your computer. Trying to match the adverts to the user was their claim. And often you were offered free samples by the companies paying for the adverts. How the company hoped to make money stumped the experts. They had to be burning through mountains of cash. But why not hop on board while the ride lasted.
She had been offered manicures, pedicures and various salon visits. She wasn't sure if she shouid be insulted by all their offers but after ignoring the first few she thought she had nothing to lose and accepted a coupon for a manicurist near her home. And enjoyed it. She couldn't see herself paying to do do regularly unless maybe for a dress up occasion like a wedding but other than that....
And still the free offers came. Make overs, spa visits and always more manicures and salon visits. She was starting to think she was so silly for not taking them up on something that was costing them. And after a month or two she was at a manicurist once a week. She had never been obsessed with care of her hands and nails but she now could see why others where and if she had the money might just be tempted for a little spoiling herself.
The salon visits were becoming a weekly thing. Why not when someone else was picking up the tab. Spoil yourself if you have the chance. Why not?
They began offering her large discounts of clothing from some new stores. Super old fashioned but with discounts this large she couldn't see herself not finding something that tempted her. And after 2-3 more visits she was starting to look just like their regular clientel. Vintage suits over strict underwear. Just too good a bargin to turn down. Everyone at work was wearing the vintage styles. Did no one advertise more modern styles? The stores and salons must be losing a fortune. More fool them if she was making out like a fifties housewife on a mad spending spree...
And then the adverts for dating services started popping up. She had been putting relationships on the back burner till her career was more established. Now maybe was the time to get back into the dating game. And so she signed up.
She had to date a few losers but she did meet a few very nice guys. Guys she could see herself settling down with. Guys she could see providing her with the home to start a family. Guys who would pay for her to keep going to the salons, manicurist and dress stores... She still wouldn't be paying. Her husband would be doing that for her. They'd have to be a good provider if she was going to be a stay at home wife like she wanted to be now.
