RetroSkull — Fall Into Oblivion

Description She was tired of waiting for something - anything - to change. Her life was always the same routine. Wake up, gather food, get bored, eat, wait for the evening, sleep. She was done with her daily rituals. If nothing was to change, she'd have changed things herself. She would have left her island, without caring wether there was something beyond the sea of mist or not. She didn't know, and at that point she didn't care.
As the water started flowing faster and faster, dragging her towards what seemed to be a waterfall, she became scared. She tried resisting and fighting the currents, but they were too powerful, and carried her away against her will. Powerless against their might, she let herself be carried until the water beneath and around her suddenly disappeared. She fell.

What she thought was the sun never existed in the first place. Only an endless expanse of light and stars that from below her island lit up the sky as if there were an actual sun. Warm air blew all over her, drying her fur in a heartbeat as she fell through the air. Instead of being carried back up on the island by the water, she kept falling.
She looked down.

A sea of nothing. Jet black nothing. The purest kind of darkness. And as she kept falling, she kept closing in to it, in every second her fear growing stronger.
"This isn't going the way I planned, at all"

She braced herself with one arm, as to protect herself from the inevitable fall, ready to feel her bones crushed by the force of the impact.
Instead, as her arm touched the darkness, it gained life of its own and broke like water, exploding in all kinds of colours, from gold to green, reflecting the skies above. The water surrounded her once again but without touching her, and as she was completely surrounded with it, she disappeared.

Please excuse the terrible title, I couldn't find anything better ok.
Sequel to this . Which I started right after the first drawing but I WAS SUCH AN IDIOT THAT I FORGOT IT EXISTED so now I picked it back up and worked on it for two days straight.
I'm actually happy with the final result, the original had more vibrancy in colours but I fiddled with the final file for a bit so that I could tone it a little bit down. It was way too much. I probably could have done better but for someone art blocked as fuck, I'm not complaining xD

The perspective is most likely off, forgive me for that. I'm still learning the very basics about it.

Enjoy, I hope!

And don't worry, Mars ain't getting hurt or anything. The darkness is like a portal to other worlds, and thanks to it she learns her dimensional jumping abilities. She'll be fine.

Time taken: I don't want to know, probably 14+ hours.

This   is   INCREDIBLE AND STUNNIGLY EPIC AND BEAUTIFUL!! You overdid yourself making this work of art. It look amazing with all the little details and how you used your skills to create it, and with the story in the description, it gets very touching and deep. I find amazing how you drew her failling into the water, that pose is excelent, and about the water, same, it's beautiful how you did the splashing and the way it shines and reflects the sunlight, plus, you used different colors to colour it, and that shows your attention to detail, the sunset sky it precious and I like how the color slowly changes. About Mars, the falling pose is awesome, and I really can see true fear in her eyes. Ths point of view that you used is perfect, it makes the scene more dramatic and full of action. Definetely a masterpiece from you!

DUDE this is sooooooooo amazing!!! I'm blown away, I can't even - just - the water, all the details on each curve, splash and bend it in, the perspective, the foreshortening, the shading, the lighting, the expressions. WOW this is AWESOME!!! You should be so proud of yourself, this is really cool!!

Thank you Grace!
And truth to be told, I AM proud. I need to make more full illustrations like this one, but most of the time I'm a freaking scaredy cat and hide in my own procrastination rather than push my limits. I'm trying to break through this habit though

this came out really amazing!! i love the expression and the body language, the dynamics is so good! i love the "U" motion line that the water has, and the way her body follows that motion. i love all the cool lil' details, i can really see you've put lots of work into this piece ;v;

also poor mars i guess she's gonna be afraid of heights from now on

Holyy fcking shit Marty this is the kind of style that I've loved you for since, like, 2012. THIS
THIS IS

fuck

the colors, the perspective, the concept, the contrast THE EVERYTHinG

I genuinely, truly envy you for having this level of skill in visually articulating your own sense of imagination. I'm nowhere near this good--I'm not in the same -fuck- SOLAR SYSTEM as your level. I probably never will be either, which is why I write far more than I draw because it's the closest I can come to expressing things like this <<;

I don't honestly know if you have artblock or not, I think that's something only you can ever really know, but if you do then I can't fucking wait to see what you make once you start to hit your stride. What I DO know, is that your style of art has gone through a variant rainbow of shades, and I've pretty much enjoyed them all, though this style in particular, this right here, I think this is your bread and butter. This is crazy; it's dynamic and flowy and colorful and energetic and emotional to the max and if that doesn't describe you in a nutshell then what the fuck

-Sincerely your biggest and cringiest forever fanboy

YOUR COMMENTARY HAS ALWAYS BEEN GREAT HAHAH, I missed it <33

Thanks man, I wish I was able to churn out more art like this, but I'm too scared to do it half the time.

And hey, your only limit is yourself. Starting by saying you'll never come as far as me already hinders your improvement. Keep your head up and keep going, you can do this.

You know what? Because you asked to be honest, I'll be honest and tell you what I think: you're not art blocked. At this point I think you're just keep saying that to yourself because it provides an excuse. You don't need to 'get your drawing mojo back', because you already have it. You just keep covering yourself up with paper a box with fancy names. You've been drawing this whole time for crying out loud! But you're just lazy and avoid drawing anything more time-consuming than just a standard character for a ref sheet. If that's your mind-set then this mysterious and evul 'art block' will never go away since it's such a convenient excuse for not trying to draw too hard.

As for the picture I’m really glad you finished it, because just look at it! Do you think a person with ‘art block’ would draw such a marvellous thing? Do you really think so? This picture was a challenge and you still completed it even though it was a serious chunk of time to devote to it. And the best thing is that you think you can do better! Disregarding the ‘art block’ and all those imaginary obstacles, you yourself stated that you can do better instead of throwing a wall of complaints that bring you down. And if you want to do better, then maybe ask people to redline this picture for you? Just state somewhere that you’d love some help with perspective and you might find someone who’ll help you.

At this point I'm starting to think I'm just a freaking coward who's afraid of pushing her own limits and hides behind the art block excuse. :I

Thanks ;; It was a real challenge even for my motivation but I'm glad I completed it. I showed myself I'm capable of doing things aside from floating heads facing left.

And I'm actually interested in the whole redline thing. I think I'll start  accepting them from now on

You're not a coward. You just need more determination to focus on one bigger project rather than a dozen of small drawings.
So keep fighting the good fight!

Poor, poor Mars, I bet she kinda feels like this as she's been dumbed from being your main sona about 50 times now or something right?

Regardless, she's still a cutie-floof-ball.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RetroSkull In reply to Dragon-fang2 [2016-05-05 18:40:28 +0000 UTC]

Nah I actually think she leveled up in a way, from sona to actual character, which is better because she's her own being now. She's got actual character development and a story, she isn't a representation of someone else anymore.

O. M. GOODNESS...

ITS BEEN SO LING SINCE YOU DID A FULL PICTURE LIKE THIS!

This screams inspiration all over it. The amount of detail you put in this is beautiful. The color's and perspective are amazing sweety. The pose is still getting to me....I can't do that -tilts my head- maybe if I tried a weird way but this is dynamic all on its own!
