Description It was a rather cold, wet day. I was working on getting my Schutzenschner badge. Kellog, Brown and Root had the food contract for the Army base I was at. Naturally, they are much more concerned with making profits rather than serving good food. My meal was a freezing cold box that contained a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple past its prime, two cookies hard as rocks, a tiny bag of generic chips and a can of generic fruit juice that tasted more like aluminum moreso than whatever fruit.

A Sergeant Major of the German Army (Bundeswehr) saw my meal, and in disbelief asked me if that was actually my meal. (Ist diese Nahrung?) I nodded and replied "Yea." (Leider) He blinked a few times and jerked his head as a 'suggestion' for me to follow him. He brought me to the German area, and opened a few containers, after handing me a plate. He ordered me to eat up and not to be shy about seconds. It was simple stuff. A soup with some veggies mostly being thick broth, potatoes, peas. Huge wursts, akin to sausages. And lots of fresh bread. More importantly, the food was warm and I was freezing.

I wasn't one of his soldiers. I wasn't even in his military, more than once his Army had faught against mine. He was concerned about all the soldiers, and took measures to look after all of them. It was the mark of a good leader.

I indeed ate up the warm food and had seconds, mainly to show how much I enjoyed the first. I did qualify, and I keep my Schutzenschner award on my wall along with a letter from a German officer. It's a constant reminder to me of what leadership is about.

That's an awesome story, and a great picture to remember it by.

It's so awesomely typical of a German to be utterly aghast at that kind of crappy rations. If nothing else, we like eating well.

That's a lovely story! Though the ones responsible for providing such less-than-adequate food should be put on trial, in my humble opinion.

Awesome story! As the saying goes: Ohne Mampf kein Kampf. (Basically "No food no fight", but in German it sounds way better )

Welcome. I was highly impressed by the Bundeswehr. Glad we never had to fight them a third time. Of course, they did confirm the stereotype that they love order. In a FIELD exercise, they had clerks. With desks and name plates. And everything was recorded, twice.

Yep, a very delicious one. But artist, I ain't. I can draw a stick figure with the aid of a ruler. That's about it.

Ah well, who says you have to be able to draw to call yourself an artist? I looked at your gallery, you're a great photographer!

Heh, thank you. I used a really cheap digital camera. It wasn't even a ONE megapixel camera. Plus, I had to toss out a lot of blurry photos.

I eventually broke it. Just recently bought a new camera. All the bells and whistles. Wish I could have my old one back and working... Much easier to use

Wow, nice Story. Ya know, the Stuff you've eat there is called Linsensuppe (Lentil soup) with a pair of Bockwurst and a BrΓΆtchen. Each german soldier know it by heart since we got it allmost every day during a BIWAK (sort of hardcore camping exercise)
Makes warm pants after just 6h ^^

Ah, danke. Yea, the wurst and bread was pretty obvious, wasn't sure about the soup. Trust me, it tastes better than the stuff Halliburton fed us. Probably better for us too.

nutzelfutz [2007-09-21 09:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Yep, looks like German army food...especially the Wecken (bread) you got there. I had a more than fair share of it back when I was serving. While the food served in our base was great, field rations, unfortunately, weren't (partly due to these awful-to-clean aluminum dishes).
Mahlzeit!

Haliburton's subsidary, KBR, served our food. Lot of us got food poisoning from the lovely quality of food. Our field rations, MRE's, aren't that bad surprisingly. Not the best, of course. But for field rations...

The photo is nice, because there are common american M16s in the background and somewhat common german food in foreground. And after reading your story, the photo is even quite touching.
Feels good to see old prejudices passing away.

revdisk In reply to Bren-McGuire [2006-11-11 23:36:49 +0000 UTC]

We become used to the common, the mundane. Eventually, we tune them out. Yea, M16's are common, yea, food is common. Occassionally, you see the mundane in a new light, and gives you a different view on things. Sharing food is the most fundimental way of bonding with strangers. The more simplistic the food, the meaningful the gesture.

After the generousity and kindness the Germans have shown me, I'll always have a soft spot for 'em.
