Sisters: Chapter 2, part 2
“And then after that, I learned that Sharpteeth have this special skill where they can regrown all of their teeth again and again!” Chomper grinned as he held up his tooth, “So after that, I began to lose more teeth!” He pointed to each fang as he spoke, “I lost this one.. and then I lost this one, and this one, and this one, and this one…”
“Please… just get on with it..” Cera grumbled under her breath just loud enough for Ducky to hear her.
Ducky scooted a bit closer to the three-horn and cleared her throat a little, but Cera said nothing. She did it again before finally whispering to Cera.
“Um… Cera…? Can I ask you a question?” Ducky whispered.
“Ugh.. yeah, sure fine whatever…” Cera turned to face her, “I doubt Chomper will be done counting his teeth anytime soon..”
“Um… remember when you taught me what it meant to be mad? … well.. now I am feeling something different..”
“Oh?” Cera raised an eyebrow, “and what might that be?”
“Well… it is very similar, yes yes yes… but … it is different…” she said as she placed a hand to her stomach.
“…. Okay and??”
“Well… it happens when I am remembering someone… sometimes I feel happy… but other times I feel sad… and sometimes it happens at the same time…. Is that bad?”
“Well, I-“ Cera began, but was cut off as Mister Thicknose cleared his throat, cutting off Chomper.
“Alright Chomper, alright~” he chuckled, “you certainly do have a lot of teeth.. but perhaps it would be better if you skipped over counting all of the ones you have missed.”
“Oh right, sorry!” Chomper chuckled nervously, “To get to the end of it, I learned not to jump to conclusions when I lost my first tooth… just because something seems bad doesn’t mean it actually is.. and now I don’t get scared when I lose my teeth anymore!”
“That’s wonderful, Chomper!!” Ruby clapped.
“Way to go Chomper!” Littlefoot cheered.
“Indeed! You learned a lot from going through something like that, and for that you should be very proud!” Thicknose nodded in approval, “I never thought I would get to learn about how Sharpteeth teeth worked in all my years wandering this earth.. it’s truly fascinating!”
“Thank you sir!” Chomper nodded as he took his place next to Spike.
“Now… let’s see.. who has had a turn?” Thicknose scanned over his class, “Littlefoot.. Ruby.. Petrie.. Chomper… Cera didn’t bring anything…”
“Hmmph…” Cera grumbled.
“Ah! Ducky! Now it’s your turn!” Thicknose smiled as he looked down at Ducky, “Come up front and show everyone what you have brought!”
“Oh yes yes yes, I will!” Ducky stood and picked up her shell, bringing it to the center, holding it up for everyone to see. The group awed at its sparkling wonder, making Ducky blush with excitement.
“That is the prettiest shell I’ve ever seen!” Chomper said.
“Yes! It is the prettiest shell I have seen too!” Ruby giggled, “and I have seen many many shells!”
“Indeed… quite a pretty little thing isn’t it?” Thicknose smiled, “why don’t you tell us a bit about it, Ducky?”
Ducky brought the shell back down and glanced at it, staring at her reflection against its surface before smiling again, “Well.. it is a very very special shell that I have had even before I came to the Great Valley! My mama kept it safe for me on the journey here! Yup yup yup!”
“Where did you get it from?” Littlefoot asked.
“My eggsitter, Lila!” Ducky said, “she used to watch me and my brothers and sisters while my mama went to look for food! She was very kind.. she was, she was!”
“Well, where is she now?” Cera asked, “I’ve never seen your family with an eggsitter!”
“I…. I-I don’t know..” Ducky’s smile slowly faded, “I.. don’t remember… it’s all fuzzy in my head..” she said, “L-Like a sky puffy! … it’s hard to explain.”
Thicknose frowned a little as the young swimmer told her story, watching sadness growing ever present on her face. He blinked and spoke up, attempting to keep her in high spirits, “What special lesson did you learn from keeping this special shell, Ducky? What importance does it mean to you?”
“Well…” Ducky thought for a moment, then looked back at the shell, “I learned… that sometimes even if someone is gone.. they are still always with you.. some place inside.”
Her words seemed to resonate with almost everyone in the class, as they all gave somber nods in agreement.
“Ah yes you are certainly right about that, Ducky…” Thicknose trailed, “Sometimes someone we love can no longer be with us… but they are still always somewhere deep inside.” He looked up towards the clouds passing overhead as if remembering someone, then he got an idea.
“Oh, Ducky! Would you do me a favor?” He asked, “place your special shell right here on this rock.. I want to show you something.” He said as he stormed and began leading the group over to a nearby tree and rock.
Ducky scooped up her shell and followed Thicknose over to the rock, setting the shell atop in the rock and looking to Thicknose for further instructions.
“Now.. with just the right angle..” he muttered to himself, looking at the tree above them, “I can…” he grunted as he reared up onto his hind legs, poking a hole in the canopy above and casting a beam of light down onto the shell. The light hit the shell and bounced off of it in splotches of pretty, twinkling colors all across the ground. Some of the spots of light landed on her Dino pals, who all gasped in wonder and surprised.
“Lookie!” Petrie gasped in fear, “Pretty sparkles jumped right off of shell!” His eyes widened as ge saw some of the reflections of light shining against Cera, “AND THEY STUCK TO CERA! AAA!” He squawked and hid behind Littlefoot.
“Woah!!” Littlefoot awed and laughed, “that is an amazing trick, Mister Thicknose!”
“The sparkles on the shell have jumped onto us! Now we are just as sparkly!” Ruby giggled at the reflections.
“I wonder what they taste like!”
“So pretty…” Ducky whispered as she watched her friends play in the reflections of light. She turned her head and looked up at Mister Thicknose, “Thank you, Mister Thicknose.”
“Your shell truly is special, Ducky.” He gave her a gentle smile, “Almost as special as you!”
Ducky giggled and hopped down to play with her friends, but a sudden horrified gasp cut them off. The gasp came from Petrie, who was fluttering back over to the group.
“Petrie?” Littlefoot asked.
“Ugh.. what’s wrong now?” Cera grumbled.
“ME SNUGGLING STICK.. IT GONE!” He squawked and hugged onto Littlefoot’s neck.
“Nonsense!” Mister Thicknose said, “Are you sure you didn’t just misplace it, Petrie?”
Ruby craned her neck over to the area where the group was previously seated and gasped, “His Snuggling stick IS gone… but so are the sweet bubbles I was going to share with everyone!”
“Huh?” Littlefoot asked as he looked as well, “M-My tree star is gone!!”
“And my tooth!!” Chomper cried out.
“Oh no.. e-everything is gone!” Ducky whimpered as she carried her shell and followed the group back over to their spot, “What could have happened to your things?”
“Hah! I knew it!” Cera stomped her foot, “I knew someone stole all of Tria’s stones!”
“Huh?” The group turned to look at her.
“And now they’ve stolen all of your precious items as well!” She snorted and narrowed her eyes, “I’m gonna tell my dad!”
