Description Okay, so Nitro Fueled! That's a thing that's out now! Here's my short review: I fucking love it.

Seriously though, I've been playing this game constantly for the past few days and it has way surpassed my expectations. I have to admit that I was a little worried when I saw how much emphasis was being put on the Nitro Kart content in the trailers. Like, "Okay fine, but this is still a CTR remaster... right?" Yeah, any concern I had about the game not being loyal to the original went away just about as soon as I reached the title screen.  In my opinion, as a remaster, this is easily as good as the N. Sane Trilogy.

I know this is a weird thing to focus on, but I really loved the new boss cutscenes: SO MUCH better than people sitting in their karts, talking at you. (Although I was kind of surprised that Papu Papu wasn't changed at all to make him any less of a ridiculous stereotype...?) But Joe was amazing, he just gives off this murderous energy I'm pretty sure he didn't have before, and I died when he randomly started sharpening his blade on the wheel of his kart.  And Pinstripe, obviously my favorite, I LOVED. It's funny because I actually wasn't sure how I felt about his character model in the N. Sane Trilogy, but for some reason it worked fine for me here. He's so suave, and his new voice is actually pretty cute and grew on me quick. (And, um... I heard that he's voiced by the guy who does Prompto from FFXV??! That blew my mind a little: explains why his screams sounded vaguely familiar though... ) Also, I need to mention Penta Penguin: I know I've been a little hard on this guy in the past, but I take it back. I love him in this. The fact that he now literally says "penguin yay one" is like my favorite easter egg ever.

Is it just me though, or is this game harder than the original?? I've been trying to do races on hard mode and I am losing A LOT.  The controls feel the same though, so if it's just that the AI are more difficult... I'm fine with that, I enjoy a challenge.  I've been working at getting N. Tropy unlocked, and I'm excited to see what he's like once I have him playable!

UPDATE: Holy shit I can't believe how many faves this has gotten. Thanks guys, you're all awesome.

Pinstripe definitely looks bad, but in a good way. It's just a shame that his high acceleration is offset by bad turning abilities (something that even Coco, N. Gin, and Nitros Oxide suffer from); compare that to the Mario Kart series, where a vehicle with high acceleration is typically paired with high handling, but has low speed and low weight as a drawback.

Yeah, his stats aren't my favorite either. (I just like the character. ) I'm actually not quite as bothered by his low handling; it's his low speed that I find frustrating. Even though I personally prefer CTR:NF to Mario Kart, I'll still admit that Mario Kart definitely has a better system for this stuff.

Another problem with CTR: Nitro-Fueled is its Pit Stop feature, where the unlockables require a lot of Wumpa Cash to purchase. And the thing is, nearly every unlockable is aesthetic, which makes the prices feel even more ridiculous; they don't do anything to affect your racer's statistics.

Anyway, in terms of viability, it seems that you'll get the best use out of the perfectly balanced characters like Crash, Cortex, Komodo Joe, and Fake Crash (5/7 for all stats); their top speed is only second best, but they don't suffer from the turning weaknesses that the expert racers have, and their acceleration is better than what the beginner racers have. Sure, you can potentially win with the expert racers, but certain tracks do tend to favor the racers with stronger turning stats.

With that said, the game is still good, and stays true to the original PS1 title; it merely lacks the stat diversity that the Mario Kart series is known for.

The Pit Stop certainly isn't my favorite thing about the game, although to be honest, not a lot of the unlockables are particularly interesting to me anyway. (So no real loss!) Pinstripe, Komodo Joe, and N. Tropy are the characters I tend to use. I'm just personally not into the high handling characters. I find it ironic that they're called "beginner" characters, since their low speed makes them more difficult to win with on the simpler tracks.

And yes, even as a long-time Crash fan, I have to give Mario Kart credit where credit is due.

Ironically, the beginner racers do have the strongest turning abilities, which does give them an advantage on tracks that the advanced racers tend to struggle at. But as you said, the lower top speed can be a problem whenever the perfectly balanced racers are able to fully replicate the actions that the beginner racers can pull off.

Anyway, while I have recently achieved 100% completion in Adventure mode (it was a Classic playthrough as Crash), I do know that unlocking N. Tropy will end up being a huge chore, as some of his challenge times are way too demanding. Also, of all the Adventure mode tracks that I've covered, Dragon Mines is the only one where I have yet to acquire the Gold Relic; that track has a segment that easily ruins Power Sliding attempts, and slowing down is not an option when doing Time Trial runs or Relic Races.

Oh man, beating that guy on Dragon Mines was the worst!  I'm assuming you're getting stuck on that bit with the spiral ramp, that's definitely where I had the most issues. I think I actually ended up using an Advanced character and kind of hopped my way up the ramp; that's the best way to do a sharp turn without braking. By the way, congrats on your 100% completion!

Thanks. However, it appears that Nitros Oxide has a costume that can only be unlocked by achieving 101% completion. Maybe it has something to do with acquiring Platinum Relics in all the Adventure mode tracks, but I'm not sure if that's truly the case.

In regards to Dragon Mines, using an advanced racer didn't sound like a good move on my end, as some of the track's Power Sliding opportunities can't be taken by them (or at least, it seemed that way until N. Tropy's challenge time showed up). Sadly, I'm currently just too slow to finish below the 1:45 mark, and the same also goes for the Relic Race, where you need to finish below 1:11 to get the Gold Relic.

It looks like you just need all the gold relics for 101% percent, and all the platinum relics will give you 102%. (That's gonna be hard...)

Beating N. Tropy's times certainly takes a fair amount of practice. Sometimes I find it's useful to watch him carefully and replicate his moves as closely as possible. I've learned a thing or two from him! In any case, good luck with that gold relic!

Yeah, Dragon Mines is the only Adventure mode track that I have yet to get the Gold Relic at. As for Platinum Relics, I have 3, with one of them coming from Tiny Arena (the other two are from Slide Colosseum and Turbo Track). In fact, you could say that Tiny Arena is a huge blessing for the balanced racers, as the amount of turbo boost and Power Sliding opportunities that they can take on that track can easily get them below 3:40 in Time Trial mode (10+ seconds faster than N. Tropy's challenge time).

I wish the series would use him more in future games, because he's just that kind of character I would favor.

Yeah, same here. I'm just guessing he was left behind because he's pretty violent for a kid-friendly game. I'd still love to see him come back, though.

Some awesome Pinstripe expressions.

I love Pinstripe and want to use him as a racer but he's an acceleration type (I prefer speed). Wish we could choose what speed types we want as a customization option.

Reviroo In reply to JenL [2019-06-27 02:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! And yeah, I get that. To be honest, acceleration isn't my favorite type either, so I mostly just use him for fun and switch to someone with better stats when I'm trying to take on an actual challenge.

I know that in Mario Kart, the stats are more reliant on the way you customize your vehicle, rather than the character you choose. It's too bad that CTR doesn't have that kind of system, that would probably solve the problem.
