Description
IT'S FINALLY DONE!!!PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEASE CRITIQUE THIS!!!
So after watching and absolutely loving both Edge of Tomorrow and Jurassic World, I knew I had to draw fanart. But I didn't know if I wanted to draw two pieces with how few pages I had left in my artbook. So I did this to tribute both of them.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW?! Do you understand why I've taken so damn long to draw this? Because Indominus had a ridiculous amount of detail on her scales, and the ALPHA was made of hundreds of tentacles.
But I don't care, I think this is my best work yet, and I'm so proud of it. I hope you guys like it just as much!

Thank you very much for the well thought and written critique.
I also greatly appreciate the advice you gave me on lighting, since that's something I do need to practice more.
IF you want another good art piece, and a place to critique lighting affects, please check out my Keeper drawing! It's the first piece that I really tested out lighting on.
Thanks again, and I will definitely take your advice to heart!

You're welcome! It's not often that I see people requesting critiques on their work, and I like to give them when I see that I can!
Yeah, lighting is a very unique thing to work with. It can be the easiest thing in the world, or the most difficult thing in the world. What do you use exactly, Prismacolor?
I'll give Keeper a look.
I'm glad you will!

Critiquing is something everyone should try and do when asked.
Yes, Prisma is my brand!
Thanks!

Great work, good use of textures.
The blue creature is really cool and interesting and I love its design
Few things I can point out to make your submission more appealing.
First being the contrast, since your using a traditional medium and uploading through a scanner or photo. If you made the black way way darker it would really pop out the blue creature. You could do that by increasing the contrast
or using some sorta color correction tool.
the raptor's anatomy isn't quite there. But you have made alot of observations to where everything belongs. the segments of scales. its just those arms and legs could be more dynamic.
keep it up!

Yeah the Mimic is an interesting being, it's really just made of millions of tentacles wrapped around each other. I would have messed with the contrast, but the fact that I used multiple shades of grey, I didn't want to make it too dark so that the detail would be hidden, it would have brought in the blue too.
Also, the "raptor" Is actually I-Rex from Jurassic Park. It's more T-Rex than Raptor. And also, *Ugh I can't believe I didn't mention this before*, I actually used a toy dinosaur as reference for the skin design of the dinosaur so thanks for saying my observations paid off.
But what do you mean "dynamic" for the legs and arms?

So this is what kept you so long to finish? I must say all that time putting in so much detail had put in the definition of paying off, spectacular work on both of the monsters my friend, especially the one in the left, I love the colors too ^^ now onto the statistics:
Vision: Absolutely brilliant marvel of how well thought out you pieced together this great piece of art
Originality: The originality of this is very good, although I don't know if they were from a movie or something or you have completely made these two up, whatever it may be, it's amazing!
Technique: The colors and design of the pic is vibrantly unique in its own way, which made me happy to see. And the pencil work is awesome too. So I have nothing to complain about this at all.
Impact: It made me stop in my tracks when I was checking out my notifications and I instantly knew who's artwork was posted, which made me smile. All I needed was just a glimpse and I was already liking it.
Another fine piece of work from a gifted artist such as yourself, the time spent on it was very well paid off friend, as always, don't stop being awesome my friend! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Oh man I was smiling all the way when I was reading this. I'm so glad that you found this so awesome, even by just seeing the preview in your inbox.
Also these two are from films.Β
Left: Alpha Mimic from Edge of TomorrowΒ
Right: Indominus Rex from Jurassic World.

Eeeeyp. I'm typically recognized for how much detail I put into my work. Some would say it's too much detail, WELL I SAY IT'S TOO LITTLE!!!

I think it's important to loosen up and draw simpler things every now and then. That's why you'll find cartoonish drawings mixed in with the more detailed creature/character pieces.

Rexlare In reply to xLeSpiderx [2018-05-27 03:54:38 +0000 UTC]
Well that's what I did last night and am continuing tonight. Just drawing simple stuff for now... still, you'd find that that even it is packed with minute detail.

xLeSpiderx In reply to Rexlare [2018-05-27 04:27:36 +0000 UTC]
I can't turn off my attention to detail fully either. I can rarely resist to "finish" the lines of a drawing in pen and add rudimentary shading or crosshatching even when drawing simple cartoony things. Some things just stay "on" and can't be "shut off" so easily.

With me, the most simplest thing I can draw without focusing on detail is my Dragonsona... even so I feel compelled to give lines in his fur...

xLeSpiderx In reply to Rexlare [2018-05-27 19:38:03 +0000 UTC]
Then just try it: draw a circle with two dots and a line - VOILA a human face. Albeit a highly abstracted face... Cartoon/comic style is really about downsizing the details to what's the most important.

Rexlare In reply to xLeSpiderx [2018-05-27 19:40:43 +0000 UTC]
NO!!! HERESY!!!
In all honesty, cartoon is just not my style. I'll draw it for my mascot since cartoon characters drive more revenue, but I want to aim for more realism in my artwork.

xLeSpiderx In reply to Rexlare [2018-05-27 22:22:22 +0000 UTC]
I find that abstraction of the design allows you to aim for a different sort of realism. Think of how pixar characters are cartoonishly shaped but have intricate detail in the textures and mannerisms.

Rexlare In reply to xLeSpiderx [2018-05-27 23:33:17 +0000 UTC]
Again, not really my style. Maybe I'll experiment with old Disney cartoon style since it's a good minimalist realism look, but again, Realism is just more my style.

Oh trust me, it did.Β
But among the hours of painstaking work and detail, I have but only one regret.
That I know I could redo this, and probably do it much better... but I refuse to.

Looking at the detail, this would have taken a long time to complete and yet, you have executed your skills marvelously! I wouldn't worry so much about the anatomical issue, since portraying a battle scene itself is already a challenging task. If you say this is your best work yet, I have to agree. But after seeing this, you're more than capable of making more epic drawings Issac!
I'd love to hear the battle theme of these two, it'll add to the epicness!

The amount of detail that you have completed on this shows the dedication and the time that it took you to complete it and I think that it really paid off - the finished piece is stunning! The anatomy of the Rex looks great, but for improvement I might suggest looking at the anatomy of the hind leg feet, I feel like thatΒ area could have been improved - although I understand how difficult feet can be to draw! xD
The way you have drawn almost every scale is amazing and makes the piece look a more realistic/believable, although the scales going across the back are fantastic, butΒ they seem to suddenly become shorter and smallerΒ when they reach the tail, I have never looked at the anatomy of the Indominus Rex so I am not sure if this was intentional and that they actually look like that - or if would simply look that way based on the angle the Rex is facing.
The colouring on this is amazing, I love the use of gray, black and blue used together on Alpha Mimic, the colours look really good together and the colours and lighting inside of its mouth is done well. The only critique that I would give for colouring would be to suggest a small amount of lighting into the eyes.
Overall - great work - keep it up!

Thank you for the long and well detailed comment! I am glad you loved this piece as much as I did when it was completed. I can't say as much as I enjoyed making it, because let's be honest, making it was a pain in the ass.
And as for your question on the scales, I actually had with me a rather well made toy of a spinosaurus that had immense detailing and paint applications to it, so I said I'd use it as a reference because it was so heavily detailed. Guess you could say it was all intentional.
Thanks for all the good praise and constructive criticism. Really appreciate it all. Thank you.

Haha - I feel your pain, sometimes a piece can just be so frustrating and annoying to complete - especially if you make any errors, but it is greatly satisfyingΒ when you finish that longΒ piece. References can only make your work better.
No worries - how could I look at something so detailed and not comment? xD

By moving to the next deviation? But I'm glad you didn't.
And Daily-Art just requested if I could have this in their gallery. I'm so honored that after all this time, people still give this piece attention. It's a good feeling really... to know that people genuinely enjoy your work for what it is.

So that means you spent 48 minutes per day working on this? I spent about almost (maybe) 7-16 hours per day just to catch up (but only on day-offs and weekends)
