Description I never posted Muldoon's original ref to dA; but with the release of some new Utahraptor info, I figured it was time my main raptor got a new ref.
New Ytahraptor reconstructions show it as being a much larger, but stockier dromeosaur with a proportionately shorter tail. The major non-proportion/size based physical change is the slightly down-turned bottom jaw.
Additionally, as an effort to move away from "shrink-wrapped" reconstructions, I gave Muldoon more soft tissue and feathering more similar to that of a bird. In particular, since he is inspired by pigeons in design, I based a lot of his "plump" on that of a pigeon's. The major elements of this are his neck and the space between his sternum, pelvic girdle, and caudal vertebrae (his belly, pelvis, and tail). A lot of paleoart tends to show a tight wrapping of flesh around the pelvic girdle, showing a massive jutting bone which then dips back in and a skinny tail. This tightness around the cloaca area really doesn't show up in birds or reptiles and is instead typically a smooth, tapering surface.; o I tried to channel that into him.
I'm overall pretty happy with how he turned out, the giant ball of fluff. Aside from coloration, the only artistic "nonsense" I really kept about him was his crest; it's always been a major feature of his and he IS still a character and not just a reconstruction. I'm hoping to get in more practice with non-"shrink-wrapped" art; although it's a LOT easier to apply this style to the avian dinosaurs, since they have living relatives. Not really sure what I'm gonna do about critters like ceratopsians. D:
