It's a strong and near iconic design, and was a huge improvement over the Charlton designs. Ultimately because it's such a good design every attempt to dramatically change it just doesn't quite work, be it the Kingdom Come version, the early 2000's attempted reboot/variant Breach character, or the New 52 reboot energy being with flame hair, the classic DC version will eventually come back.

Pat Broderick really nailed the design and I never really understood why Alex Ross felt he had to try to modify it.

I like Alex Ross' work, but he does tend to be rather opinionated about certain things and I can't say I'm fond of a lot of his designs. He has a habit of trying to "fix" things that aren't broken.

Well, I can understand things like Kingdom Come or Earth X where characters are supposed to have changes in design. I mean in Kingdom Come he was just following Mark Waid's lead (since Waid wrote it). I just don't see bringing those "alternate" designs into mainstream canon.
