Hi guys, you can check out a bit more lively version of this pic on netherlost.com Β Β - it's a site of my augmented reality board game project NetherLost that I've been developing with some friends for the past year. We finally decided to go public, but at the moment it is just a very early sneak-peak announcement and my team would kill me if I spill too much
However you already can subscribe to our newsletter to get info about the launch of the full website and later about our kickstarter campaign and release dates (no spam). That's a really interesting way of doing a background shift. I wonder how well an svg would load compared to the large png files you have at the moment.

Yes, since all browsers support svg these days and they're much smaller files to download. The middle-ground trees might be a good candidate for simple svg. Where as the fore and back are more complex and you'd need to do more work to learn how to produce the same effects. (although the advantage is that you can animate the graphic in javascript, bend a branch, have owl eyes peer at you every few minutes)
You can mix and match, have bits in png and bits in svg, whatever makes the page load fast and gives you the effect you want.

Yea, probably some parts would be possible to do in vector, but I'm certainly not competent enough to make it so that it all blends together well with the current style

I like that I get the idea that the cracks in the trees are their mouths even though they don't have any other facial features. Its subtle and obvious at the same time.
