Description
Painted version of this sculpt: [link]Commission.
15" l x 9.5" h x 5" w
Super sculpey firm over a wire and foil armature. This piece is a maquette that will be used as reference for a large carousel-style woodcarving of the dog. It will probably end up being larger than life-size.
Done for Tim Racer: [link]
Tim's work is amazing, and I can't even begin to express how honored and grateful I am that he asked me to sculpt something for him.
This was a challenge to sculpt, and a challenge to paint as well, and I am very, very happy with the outcome. Tim is happy with it as well, which is what matters most!
A huge thank you to for helping me with the lighting in the shots on the bottom. It was a challenge to get good photos of this piece, and I couldn't have done it without him!

Thanks! I don't do requests, but if you're interested in commissioning me, you can always e-mail me or send me a note here on dA.

I am taking a break from dog sculptures, but you could always commission me at some point if you want something similar. It'd be expensive to ship it to you, though...
Anyway, thank you very much--I'm glad you like it enough to want to own a piece like it. That's a huge compliment!

Thank you!
Things are okay, although this year has been kind of rough. I had to cut way back on my computer time, which is why I'm not around as much. I've missed talking with you, too!
I hope you're doing well and that this year has been good for you.

Same here... definitely a rough year. I think a lot of people are feeling it for some reason. Hopefully things will come around soon ~ it's almost a new year.

Wow.... This looks almost exactly like my dog. Very minor differences. Even the same random spot on his neck! .. And the fact that he's a boy.
Great work though... The details are just amazing.

I saw photos of your dog in your gallery--you're right, he does look quite a bit like Josh. Handsome boy!
And thanks! I'm glad you like it.

Adorable! THIS is the kind of sculpture I believe deserves a DD~
Even the smallest fur details around the eyes are PERFECT. You added every detail needed.
Personally, I think that the sculptures that are merely the clay/material doesn't deserve a DD because it isn't a FINAL peice. THIS is painted and actually LOOKS like it's finished. This deserves far more than JUST a DD.

Thanks, I'm really glad you like it.
I don't know--I've seen some gorgeous sculptures in other members' galleries that are jaw-droppingly good as they are, without paint.
Would you really say that *MarkNewman 's or :devtrevsolo:'s numerous DDs weren't deserved because their sculpts aren't painted? Sometimes an artist may consider their work to be complete without paint. Also, some clay, such as plastilene, isn't paintable, and some sculptures are meant to be enjoyed as-is (such as stone carvings), or with a simple patina (such as bronzes).
I even got a DD on an unpainted piece once.
Sculpture is pretty underrepresented on dA, and I am always happy to see a sculpture get a DD, regardless of whether it's painted or not, but to each their own.

Looking at those, I wouldn't say they are undeserves but it's merely my personal preference to have completed, painted sculptures. I don't mean any offense to you, if it is. But I've seen plenty of undeserved DDs on lazy sculptures.
When it looks complete with it, and someone put time and effort into it, then it's DD worthy. It's merely the sculptures that look like they need the paint, because they are, well, just a bit bland without it.
While looking at their galleries, I would say that, yes, those are DD worthy because they look like there was time and effort put into them. Not something that someone just wanted to hurry up and finish.
Some of *MarkNewman 's look preferably complete without paint, because it gives an older feeling to them, and a darker feeling in others. But none of those are not DD worthy.
I would post an example, but I do not want to insult or offend the creator of it.

Nope, I'm not offended--I merely disagree.
There was a point in time when I was irked by some of the DD selections and felt, like you, that some of them were undeserved. It really bothered me. I don't know what changed, but for whatever reason, I don't see things the same way any longer. Even if I don't happen to like a particular piece that's featured, it doesn't irritate me like it used to. Maybe it's simply that to me, because there's so many ways to create art, and so many varying tastes when it comes to viewing it, it's kind of pointless to fume over the featured pieces that I don't care for. It's enough that a gallery moderator felt that it was worthy. Some subset of dA is bound to enjoy the piece, even if I don't happen to find it appealing. The artists who get featured don't ask for it, and there's really no way to tell by looking how much time and effort was put into a given piece.
I brought up *trev-solo and *MarkNewman because they are two of my favorite sculptors and are both industry professionals. There are numerous examples of really phenomenal unpainted sculptures, though. It's fairly standard in the movie and toy/model industries for sculptors to leave their work unpainted, and painting tends to be viewed as a separate step. There's no point to painting a piece if it's going to be scanned into a computer or used as a reference for an animator, and there's also no point to painting a piece if it's going to be cut up and made into molds for mass-production. If you were to spend some time on an online community such as the Clubhouse or the Shiflett Brothers' forum, you'd probably see a lot of phenomenal, "finished" sculptures that aren't painted.
I also want to point out that a boring or bland sculpture probably isn't going to be totally redeemed by even the best paint job. The paint may help a little, but whatever characteristic it was that made the sculpture uninteresting is still going to be there. I think that the thing that makes a dimensional representational piece interesting has to be in the sculpture itself, not on the surface. When it comes down to it, you might not like the painted version of a sculpture you found to be uninteresting when it was unpainted.
I'm not trying to say I'm right and you're wrong, just that my perspective differs from yours. You can always Note me the example you're thinking of, if you like. I think it's fascinating and interesting to debate/discuss stuff like this with intelligent people such as yourself.

Thanks!
I tend to think that patience, hard work, determination and practice are as important (if not MORE important) as talent when it comes to art. I encourage you to give sculpting a try if you're interested. You never know; you may find it to be as rewarding and enjoyable as I do.
