Description
Painted version of this sculpt: [link]Commission.
15" l x 9.5" h x 5" w
Super sculpey firm over a wire and foil armature. This piece is a maquette that will be used as reference for a large carousel-style woodcarving of the dog. It will probably end up being larger than life-size.
Done for Tim Racer: [link]
Tim's work is amazing, and I can't even begin to express how honored and grateful I am that he asked me to sculpt something for him.
This was a challenge to sculpt, and a challenge to paint as well, and I am very, very happy with the outcome. Tim is happy with it as well, which is what matters most!
A huge thank you to for helping me with the lighting in the shots on the bottom. It was a challenge to get good photos of this piece, and I couldn't have done it without him!

You ought to start posting the picture of the dog you are sculpting, so that we can give you better critiques! Otherwise, I have no choice but to tell you that it is absolutely perfect!
Keep it up, I am excited to see where you will be a year from now Maybe I'll give you a challenge and have you sculpt my fur ball, Ollie

beautiful as always, man. I checked out the work of that Tim guy, and holy hot shit, he is one of the most fabulous wood workers I have ever seen in my life. The realism he puts into the head to catch the character and expression is extraordinary, and I really like the more rigid angles and shapes in the musculature of the body, it reminds you of the medium and also kind of reminds me of Tamara Lempicka's work and other artists from that era...the kind of modern, something nearly deco and yet pulling a lot of inspiration from the art nouveau movement with the organic movement of the piece. Or something to that effect. In anycase, love it, love his work, and SUPER kudos to you for being an awesome artist and getting to work with another super awesome artist! I hope you post a link to the eventual carving that he does!

Thanks!
You pretty much summed up exactly why I adore his artwork as well. I love the stylistic choices he makes and the play between that stylization and the organic forms in the subject.
I will definitely post a link to the finished carving when it's done, though it will be a while.
If you don't mind, can I pass your words along to Tim? I'm sure he'd dig hearing how much you like his stuff!
Thanks again for such an awesome comment.

I love your work. Everytime I look at one of your statues, it makes me want to try. I went out and bought a bunch of stuff to make clay sculptures. It is ALOT harder than it looks...

Thanks!
Keep practicing. It's awesome you bought some sculpting supplies. And it's not easy, but it's so rewarding if you stick with it and work at it. Happy sculpting. I'm honored that the work I do makes others want to try. I can't think of a better compliment!

Thanks, but I can't take credit for that--Tim gave me a drawing to use as reference for the pose.

very well executed in any case. converting an image to a 3d object accurately takes improvisation and anatomical knowledge. the sculpture is amazing, theres so much to say about it. its all in the comments though... ill summarize with a fave >__<

This amazes me even more than the unpainted version!! Your skills are amazing, especially with the paint, the eyes, and especially the spots on the belly and white hairs around the eyes, it's mind blowing how much you detailed that!!
Seriously the best sculptures I have seen!

Thanks!
I really agonized over getting the details just right with the paint. This dog definitely has unique markings, and they were pretty fun to add to the sculpture.

This is so amazing. I can't imagine the talent and skill it must take to make a sculpture this realistic. Its gorgeous. Your commissioners must be so happy. I'd love to see the carousel dog that they make from this. Wow.

Thanks!
When Tim is done carving and painting his piece, I will see if I can get a link with photos of it to post. It'll be a while since he only just started carving the wood, but I'll post a journal with an update if/when I get photos.

While you might be a fan of Tim's work(and I admit I am too) your work is absolutely stunning in detail the shape of the dogs muscles, the mouth and eyes, my word, he truly look life like. The details in the painting as well I notice you even got the spots under the dogs coat to show just right (skin spots i call them my Laur's don't show unless she gets wet then her white looks spotty). Fantastic! Just wanted you to know you have a fan as well!(tho i'm sure you know that you have many by now)

Aww, thank you. You noticed the belly splotches!
I admit, I am pretty dismissive of my own work and had some trouble getting my head around the fact that someone I admire and respect would want a sculpture from me (I still feel like such a novice when it comes to sculpting in particular and art in general).
I am really flattered that you enjoyed my piece. Thank you for such a kind, heartfelt, comment; I am truly honored to have you as a fan.
Is that Laur in your avatar? She is lovely, if so!
