Description

Here's the turnaround photoset for my “Welcome to Inlé” sculpture.

As some of you may know, this project actually started in 2006 when I decided I wanted to sculpt my interpretation of the Black Rabbit of Inlé from Richard Adams’ Watership Down. I was still pretty new to sculpting, but ended up making something I was really happy with and that marked a pretty big turning point for me, both in terms of style and subject. You can view the unpainted version of the initial sculpture here: The Black Rabbit: Unpainted and the painted version here: Black Rabbit, Painted

Last summer, a couple purchased the original piece, paid me to create a more detailed base for the piece, and also gave me free rein, creatively speaking, to do so.

The project ended up taking me about nine months to complete, and the finished piece is definitely something that was a blast to work on, but also was a big challenge. I’m pleased with how it turned out, and though I miss it now that it’s in its new home, I’m glad to have it off my plate.

It definitely won’t be the last time I explore Inlé, or the Black Rabbit himself, through sculpture, though, you can count on that.

Super Sculpey original/firm blend and apoxie Clay over a wire, foil, wire mesh, and wood armature, painted with cel-vinyl, mounted on a poplar board, 22”x11”x16”.

Please don't forget to check out the detail shots I posted in my gallery as well! They're here: Welcome to inle detail montage

Some of you who also watch me on Tumblr saw this posted there several weeks ago. I am very rarely on my desktop these days and do most of my browsing on my tablet. For some reason, when I tried submitting this on dA using it, this time, dA wasn't cooperating. I'm hoping it was just a glitch with the OS of my tablet (which I'd just updated), and not something that's going to be a problem from now on. In any case, if you want more regular updates from me, including more frequent WIP photos, I'd encourage you to follow me on Tumblr as well: blackrabbitsculpture.tumblr.co… .

As always, thanks for looking; hopefully it won't be long before I have a new WIP to show you all; I have a busy winter and spring ahead of me to prepare for the 2015 Festival of Arts!

Can't fully express how much I love this. Masterfully done. (And, also, I've read Watership Down more times, by far, than any other book out there.)

The images you got of this are stunning Rachel. It really shows off this piece the way it needs to be. Every angle is so fun to look at.I'll bet it was tough to see it go, but you have some incredible images to hang on to. As always, incredible work my friend! Take care

How can I express how awesome I find this sculpture? Well for starters, this part really scared me when I first read Watership Down as a kid, and this sculpture brought back some of that feeling to me - but in a good way. At the same time, it's really beautiful; beauty and horror often go well together in art. And in terms of quality and detail, it just blew me away - it's definitely giving high-end sculpts like Sideshow a run for their money!

This is fantstic. I have to be honest, I haven't watched this film in years but knew immediately what it was from. The detail and everything in this is just... Stunning. Really amazing work.

Though I have to admit - I seem to remember the first (and the last I believe) time I watched the film, it terrified me and I don't recall watching it again XD though I may have to watch it again or look out for the book~ Amazing work again, cannot praise this enough
