Description I was up near Lee's Ferry doing a hike on Sunday when this previously lightning-caused forest fire literally flared up. The smoke plume was absolutely awe-inspiring. I can't imagine what the firefighters up there were experiencing, looking up and witnessing this massive thunderhead blotting out the last of the sun's rays. This makes the Brins Fire pale in comparison. For better perspective, checkout ~TarryAGoat 's shot, taken all the way from Page, AZ .

You have to realize that my submission would not classify well as a photojournalism image. The long exposure collects more light than your eyes would, thus making the light more dramatic and intense. Still, it was quite enthralling to see in person. I may toss this into scraps. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

Wow, this is so amazing, almost surreal. I love the power and color the fire and smoke have. The contrasting blues, reds, grays and blacks are really mesmirizing. This is just amazing, what a wonderful shot to be able to capture!

yes...at least there is some rain, now...is the north rim getting any of it?

I have not heard. I can only imagine (and hope) that under normal circumstances, the North Rim gets just as much, if not more moisture than us.

wow... that's really an impressive photo...
The stillness in the photo in spite of the 5sec exposure has me puzzled. For some reason, I'd expect there to be more blur from the rising plumes of smoke... but here it seems so still. I guess you were far enough from the fire for it not to be an issue..

I was surprised too at how little blur showed up (and a little bit elated), but I think that's mostly due to the amorphous nature of the subject, the sheer size of the smoke cloud, and the distance that this was taken at. If you look at some of the higher ISO shots I nabbed, they're noticably more distinct in terms of cloud edges. Also, if you look in the upper right section of the photo, you'll see a jet or a plane or a satelite that was passing through the frame at the time that will give you a better idea of the long exposure. Thanks for dropping by and commenting.
