Description
I was up near Lee's Ferry doing a hike on Sunday when this previously lightning-caused forest fire literally flared up. The smoke plume was absolutely awe-inspiring. I can't imagine what the firefighters up there were experiencing, looking up and witnessing this massive thunderhead blotting out the last of the sun's rays. This makes the Brins Fire pale in comparison. For better perspective, checkout ~TarryAGoat 's shot, taken all the way from Page, AZ .You have to realize that my submission would not classify well as a photojournalism image. The long exposure collects more light than your eyes would, thus making the light more dramatic and intense. Still, it was quite enthralling to see in person. I may toss this into scraps. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

That's crazy...it must have been frightening.
Is this in AZ?

This is absolutely phonomenal! Wow! Those colors are amazing. I bet that it was even cooler looking in person. I'm amazed with the colors, it looks almost like a volcanic eruption or something.

Thanks! Yeah, it was pretty intimidating to witness this massive cloud of smoke rise out of nowhere at dusk.

This is an amazing photo! If I had taken this shot, I would be entering it into contests and competitions. I think it is really pretty. It's sad that the cause is a fire, but I don't think I have ever seen a prettier forest fire picture!

How on earth did I miss this when you originally submitted it!?! This picture is way cool, a lot more "fire-like" than my far-off shot. That internal light is eerie.

My initial thought was that the general quality of the file is somewhat substandard, but I've given up on that now. Too many people apparently like it. If I could shoot it again, I'd use a faster lens and try to cut down on the blurriness in the clouds.

This is a stunning photograph. I cannot tell it is a forest fire. Had you told me it was a volcano, I might have believed you. It looks more like the entrance to a demonic inferno. This is an instant fav.

Thanks. Even though it didn't look this bright in real life, it was still awe-inspiring to see it rising ominously up over the landscape like that.

I love it, what a great opportunistic capture. I love those instances when warm light fills up billowing clouds, or in this case, smoke. I'd say leave it in the gallery.

I was on the North Rim for the 96(?) fire.
You couldn't actually see much if you were there.
On the Soouth Rim tho, they said it looked like an atom bomb had gone off.

'96 fire? What was the problem? Were there too many trees in the way to see it clearly?

StarTyger In reply to Rhavethstine [2006-06-30 18:18:54 +0000 UTC]
I was at the rim.
Most of the views were through trees.
I did climb up the North Rim fire tower to see it (on a road that's right by the entrance station)
Most people on the rim tho could see very little.
