Description
EDIT (10 July 2017): I've learned a lot in four years, and many of these tips lose their strength when paired with the art they have. I'm going to leave this up because it may be useful or motivational to someone who is just starting to learn, but certainly, if you are at all serious about art, I highly recommend approaching a class or obtaining a book by one of the classic teachers. Andrew Loomis is a common name when talking about art instruction.I made fav.me/d332gp1 pretty. And fixed it. Yo dawg I hope you like it better than the other one because this one is definitely neater and has much better artwork yea
So I added stuff like proportions, my own OC examples, colour, fun little doodles, and other stuff like that. I took out/replaced a little bit that was outdated or incorrect. Just so you know, I don't use all of these methods (the triple face line, the parallel bars, etc) but I've found that they've helped me/others in the past, so who's to say they won't work for you? And then you see at the end my lovely inspirational quotes and junk. That's the most important.
You can download for a larger size. That's probably going to make my ugly handwriting easier to read. Sorry about it. Sometimes I just wanted to write instead of typing it out because it was fun with the brush settings I was using.
Sorry if you can't read something. I can decipher it for you if you want. Hopefully it helps as much. But enjoy. c:
Also I lost my premium account! But I don't care! Because I never come on here lol
So I'm off to disappear for another three years

Haha, thank you.
Sorry about the legibility. Is it my handwriting being messy or the font being too small? I want to fix that in case I ever do something like this in the future.

Well, not everything that every artist draws will be the exact same as other drawings of other artists.
Truthfully, the jawlines between males and females are not that different. The tutorials that say "the males' jaws are more square and the females' jaws are rounder" are pretty much extreme generalizations to my knowledge. I COULD do a guide on female jaws, but I wouldn't really be able to tell you anything different than above.
And it's important to recognize that (while this is somewhat old) I drew these for a specific audience; namely, the more cartoonish and exaggerated artists (this is, in fact, based on the older guide I created which was itself made to guide a shojo artist). I never actually said anything about the eye size, merely the shapes that one can use to make eyes. My guide isn't for people to copy exactly; it's just what it is, a guide. I hope that makes a little bit of sense (I'm running on only a few hours of sleep right now Β ).

I really like the way you showed how to variate different features to make different characters--with the chins, especially. I know I draw different chins, but I don't really think much about them...

Rhyshian In reply to EstrangeloEdessa [2013-02-08 16:15:40 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much!
An important part of drawing characters is how to make them look visually different. Personally, I hate it when I flip through a manga and see all the same faces. It gets confusing and frustrating. I at least hope I can convince people to do otherwise.
It's good that you change it up! Variation makes things a lot more interesting.
