Description
Here's a puzzle jam created by myself and Each card is about 3x4 inches across, and is an Artists Proof card from the recent Marvel Universe trading card set.

Here's the breakdown of our work on it. In consultation with our client, Meghan and I together came up with a final design that was to be a surprise. I then provided the pencils for the Rogue card, and Meghan worked off of it to create the matching pencils for the Gambit card. After Meghan colored Rogue she passed it back to me along with the Gambit pencils.

So in finishing up Gambit, I based a lot of what I did upon Meghan's choices in finishing up my Rogue. I wanted there to be a lot of contrast between the two, as hinted in Meghan's use of Gambit's signature colors on the playing card face, so where her penmanship is lovely and delicate, I went darker and sketchier. I also stayed as much as I could with warm and neutral colors, in order to further make each card really pop out from one another. Reds become very important when the primary color on the matching piece is green.

Meghan turned my art nouveau swirls into something golden, gilded and beautiful. So for Gambit, I ran with a comment Maghan made once, about looking at Gambit's swirls as the wrought iron of New Orleans. And so they are now. The skulls bring an element of the graveyeards and voodoo of New orleans into the piece as well, while also compositionally reflecting my Rogue. Well done Meghan.

In coloring the background, I went with crimson because it's the main color associated with Gambit that's missing from this particular costume. I based the fade to pink on tattoo art fades, and only slightly abstracted the coloring of those awesome skulls. The colors on the playing card reflect those commonly associated with Rogue, again reflecting Meghan's work on her card.

Gambit: inks (Copic Multiliners), colors (Copic Marker, white ink, colored pencil)
