Description
Shrinking Violet, from the Legion of Super-Heroes. This is the last of my 4 pre-Heroes Con 2011 commission requests. 11x14, greyscale copic markers, white ink, & colored pencils on vellum bristol board.I had 3 very different prelims for the client to choose from. One was her leaping out at you from a hand, all action pose-y, the second was her sitting on a hand and smiling at you, something very straight forward and almost con sketchy, if that makes sense, and a variation on the above, although with her extended leg pushing up to the right. I decided that threw the composition off way too much -- its still a little weighted on the right -- so moved it. It helps the balance out, but even more so helps out with the flow of the piece, as your eye (Westerners) tends to start reading from the upper left. So you can follow that nice long leg alllll the way down/up her torso and end with her smile.
She's showing a lot of muscle strain on the arm because that's where she's supporting all of her weight. It's the little things that make me happy.
Oh, and I modeled the hand.

This is really great, and your point about the muscle strain... nice attention to detail. She looks perfect. Well done! I'll be checking out more of your works shortly.

Ohhh! I like this version of the "rough and tough" Shrinking Violet! The thigh high boots and wild hair and sharp features give her a stiking look!

I love this piece! Super-innovative posing...something new and delicious to the eye. I'm also impressed that you did such a great job on her anatomy, considering the exotic angle you chose. Great job! Starting to wish I would've gotten a pre-Con sketch, myself!!!

Thanks! I do maintain an ongoing commission list, which, like the Shrinking Violet is much more detailed than a con sketch. Of course, it's more expensive too, so whattaya do.

Never heard of her. I like the costume, though. Great job on the hand, too.

Great job on the hand.
Do you/would you ever post the prelim sketches in your scraps or anything?
(And the little thing that makes me happy about this is the crinkles behind her knee)

Thanks!
I rarely upload prelims, I don't know why. Often they vary a good deal from the final, and I don't do a lot of variation. And they're usually taken with my cell phone. I do tend to post progress shots as I go via Twitter.
That said, I tend to keep about everything that isn't bought, so there's nothing stopping me, I guess.

Gorgeous! The stuff that stands out to me: the gloss on the cool-colored parts of her costume, and the wrinkles. Also the seams separating the cool from the warm-colored bits. Her beautifully tousled black hair, and also as you mentioned, the muscles in her arm. A great piece!

Thank you! I waffled a bit on how much gloss I wanted on the costume, and finally just went for it. You can kinda tell by looking at her upper body vs. her legs.
